Hi!

Currently I'm using the:
- 3080 FTW3 ULTRA
- Precision X1 (V1.1.0.11) software & updated to the latest firmware update.

I'm running into a weird RPM issue on the fans and it's driving me nuts.
Every time the GPU starts heavy load for example when I start a game, alt-tab back into a game or start a render the RPM of the fans starts to spike.
I have set custom fan curves in X1, tried OC mode & non-oc mode, different software (MSI Afterburner, FanControl) but nothing worked.

In the image below you can see the fans running IDLE (all good), load spike (Fans spike up to 3K+ rpm while at 60% speed?), load continues (everything is good 57% speed but normal RPM).

Not sure what to do next? RMA? Watercooling :>?

    Are you using driver 457.09?
    Downgrade driver may be normal.

Yes, currently on the 457.09 GeForce driver.
Is there a specific driver version I try/use?

    Use 456.71

    Use 456.71

    Still the same result .

Even when not using a fan-curve and setting the speed manually to (51 in this case) it ramps up like a jet engine at the start of load.

I can't imagine this is normal behavior? As I've never had this happen on any of my GPU's before.

I have the same issue with my FTW3 3090.
Those fans ramping up without reason is getting really annoying.
Also the fan speeds that my card reports when the fans ramp up are pretty funny:

Yeah, I really hope this can be fixed with a driver or firmware update.
Damn those fan speeds are crazy haha.

What kind of case do you have? How is the cooling in the case(# of fans, what type of fans, enough space for the GPU to "breathe", etc) ?

The cooling is fine. The card operates at 69-73C under load. There's definitely something wrong though. some HWMs show 50k RPM during the spikes.

Edit: I know CAM sucks but I've been trying different ones to see if they tell me something different.

    Hi there,

I have just received my XC3 Ultra 3080 and have exactly the same issue as OP. Has anyone found a fix for this at all? Thanks!

Fan control is a known problem with older drivers, update to the latest WHQL ones (I believe that's 461.09) - and you should also setup a custom fan curve because the default fan curves are bad at actually keeping the card cool most of the time.

Also, the fan/temperature readout spikes are also an NVidia driver issue having to do with the iCX or normal sensors on the card reading out incorrectly for a split second.  The fan isn't actually spiking to 50K RPM, because if it was, the fan blades would shoot off the card, through the glass of your case & probably through you in to the wall.  Just sayin'.

Thanks for the advice, although the latest drivers didn't seem to exactly solve the issue - it did still happen. I have set up a custom fan curve as suggested, and I would say this did lower the frequency of the spikes (and maybe slightly quieter too?).

Interestingly, I set the Fan Speed Update Period in Precision X1 at 100ms, lower than the default of 1000, and so far there have been no spikes. Idk if this is due to lack of time and the issue will return, but it hasn't seemed to hurt so far.

(Edit: Just had a couple of spikes straight after posting )

Do you have X1 for Gamebar installed? Uninstall it. maybe the issue is gone.

Have the same issue on my 3080 FTW3 Ultra. I can literally boot up, log in to Windows and sit in my chair. My startup programs include Malwarebytes, LittleBigMouse and Windows PowerTools and nothing else significant. Case will be silent and then the fans will just kick up to max rpm for no reason. Opening Task Manager shows the gpu at like 30C with very minimal (if not zero) usage, too. This is getting ridiculous because it largely does this when it wants. When the latest nvidia drivers came out last week or the week before, updating made it go away for like two or three days prompting me to think it was solved, but running one benchmark has put the gpu back on its rollercoaster of rpm speeds again. It will "sometimes" respond to a fan curve set in Precision, but ultimately overrides that when it chooses to randomly spin up again. Also, the time it stays at max fan speed varies from a couple of seconds sometimes up to 10 minutes. Outside of that the card has been admirable despite it being a dud in the silicon lottery trying to OC.

I had the exact same problems and then black screens started. Also the fan noise when ramping up was crazy. It was even crazier when running benchmarks I thought that the GPU would either explode or lift off the entire pc I mean I have a rather heavy rig on a heavy screwed to the wall desk with steel legs and rubber absorbs and the whole desk was shaking.

Whenever I was playing world of warcraft the GPU would rev fans up and down whenever entering portals etc or when looking at water in game etc. Once the black screens started and became very frequent I RMA'd. The new card is almost inaudible even at 100% fans but also clearly working fine under all conditions.

I would say contact service and probably initiate RMA. This will NOT be fixed by drivers.

It's been going on almost a month with no black screens, so probably safe. Also, my computer isn't bolted down and doesn't shake or anything. The fans aren't becoming violently loud, just maybe around 80-90% fan speed and holding. Not really bothersome to me sound wise, just concerned because it started happening out of nowhere.

Also, RMA isn't an option for me. Bought mine from Microcenter along with their two-year extended warranty, so doing an RMA with EVGA will void that out. I'll just wait for stock there to start to stabilize and do a swap down the line.
