I am getting severe frame drops whenever my GPU usage goes above 90% usage in games. Temps are ok. 40-50's degrees Celsius according MSI Afterburner. Same goes for the CPU temps. I have tried different drivers to no avail. I always use DDU before installing new drivers. Hell. I even reinstalled Windows earlier this year since this has been happening for a while now.
It's happening across a wide variety of games that i play whenever the GPU usage goes that high. I can't even maintain 60 fps in any of them when the GPU usage is that high. I am GPU bound in most of my games. Not sure if it's the card of if there's something else to blame. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!
My Specs:
Windows 10 (1909)
EVGA GTX 1070 Ti SC (451.67)
i7 7700K @ 4.5GHz
32GB DDR4 RAM @2400MHz
My Specs
EVGA GTX 1080Ti Kingpin Edition (445.87)
i7 7700K @ 5.150GHz 1.375V Delidded and Lapped Noctua NH-D15 Cooler
32GB DDR4 RAM @ 3636MHz 15-19-19-39
Not sure if this helps, but this is something I experienced recently. I was learning how to overclock RAM and figured I would give it a go. Since I had learned a lot about overclocking lately I decided to start from scratch. Using a few different tools to gauge progress I stabilized my CPU OC then the RAM OC and could verify that everything I was doing was making the difference I wanted. To test complete stability I use Prim95 which is free but is all CPU. All others (3DMark $30, PCMark8 $25, AIDA64 $40) are now indispensable as troubleshooting and OC tools.plus when I need help I can get better answers that save a lot of time and to me time is money. Regardless of what I am getting to is that after I got everything almost dialed in I decided to raise the BCLK to 101.0 This raises all clocks including PCIe. On my next runs, I saw something weird. My overall and GPU scores went down, While my Physics and CPU scores went up considerably. Looking at the graphs for the runs I could see that the GPU frequency was no longer a straight line, and that it was trying to clock a little higher than previous runs. Then I remembered that of course the GPU is going to clock Higher since everything does with BCLK.
The Key Takeaway that I realized was that it was now hitting Power Limit. Loaded up PrecisionXOC(Free from EVGA I don't like the Steam version) and cranked the Power Limit all the way up. After that my scores all went up a little as I expected and perfectly flat frequency graphs. And with the Higher OC I went from 100% GPU load down to an incredible 99% load. FPS drops from thermals, Volt Limit, Power Limit, an inability of the CPU to feed the GPU, and unstable OC settings as I have found. Precision can show you the first three variables and increase them if your BIOS supports it.
I never use V-Sync ever. For me it increases the GPU Load and has at times caused screen tearing with my FPS being higher at times, but is less stable. Go figure. There are a million and 1 factors that any could change performance greatly. Another thing I ran into was that my GPU was too close to my CPU cooler and had a 14C difference from the front and back sides of the GPU die. Every few degrees can drop your FPS depending.
In closing I would like to remind you that troubleshooting is about limiting variables. Please be open to people's suggestions and just try a few clicks here and there. Like the Cable Internet provider asking to powercycle the modem. In my mind I think well I tried that 50 times now, I used to work for a major ISP I know everything is great on my end and my LAN is in top shape ... and it's not a damn modem it's a router) Yet I say OK and power cycle the thing for the 1% chance this 1-minute of my life might get me back to work. Though it usually does not I figure I called them so maybe I should just follow there advice. Good Luck
