Amazon has joined the ranks of fellow tech giants in launching their very own cloud game streaming service. Luna is a cloud gaming service that lets you play games on compatible Fire TV, PC, and Mac devices as well as through web apps on iPhones and iPads. The new service will compete with Google Stadia, Microsoft xCloud, NVIDIA GeForce Now, SONY PlayStation Now, and more boutique services such as Shadow or Vortex. Luna is currently in an invitation-only stage with initial pricing of 5.99 USD per month for Luna+ while in early access. Luna+ supports gameplay on two devices at once with resolutions of up to 1080p 60 FPS with 4K support coming in the future for select titles.

Luna offers game channels which grant access to a specification selection of games for a monthly fee currently, only Luna+ is offered with a Ubisoft channel coming soon. Luna+ features a variety of action, adventure, platformer, indie, shooter, RPG, racing, and classic games from Ubisoft, Capcom, 505 Games, and Team 17 with more games to be added over time. Some of the major games on the platform include Control, Grid, Resident Evil 7, Metro Exodus, ABZÛ, Overcooked 2, and Two Point Hospital. The Ubisoft channel will include a variety of games including Watch Dogs: Legion with all DLC unlocked for play on a single device for an as of yet unannounced monthly fee.

Luna is compatible with the Xbox One controller, DualShock 4 controller, keyboard/mouse, and the Luna Controller. The Luna controller is a new controller designed specifically for the service which can connect to compatible devices over Bluetooth or USB, the controller features Alexa and Twitch integration. Twitch integration allows easy switching between Twitch streams and Luna games on compatible titles. Amazon recommends a minimum internet speed of 10 Mbps for 1080p gaming and 35 Mbps for 4K. While in early access Luna is only available to mainland US.

Well at least with so many online gaming companies the consumer has a wide variety of choice in my opinion.

Amazon seems to succeed in areas that they shouldn't , so we will see.... but it sounds just like another Google Stadia  ( which has been reviewed very poorly overall )

Does anyone you know actually use any of these services? My brother tested one of theme during a free trial, but said it wasn't worth it. Seems like they are pushing for a base that won't show up based on the amount of people pre-ordering PS5, Xbox, and trying to buy 30 series cards.

I don't understand the appeal of cloud gaming, maybe as foundation for the future, but i mean it seems terribly wasteful of bandwidth, and i know some big ISPs like comcast still have bandwidth usage caps.

I guess it'd be neat, but i don't see this working well for another 10 years or so.

I don't like the idea of relying on so much on the outside in order to game. I like the control of my own PC and what I put on it.

I played a little on a free trial of GeForce Now...  It's...  ok..  There is definitely lag.  I suppose it would be ok for someone who doesn't have the best of computers.. but the cost just seems to be a bit much..  I'd rather spend the 60+ dollars a year on steam sales.

These cloud services are good to use for casual play when you're away from your main system (ala xCloud), but imo not much beyond that.

I've yet to find a hotel that has good enough internet to stream a movie steadily at good quality, I have little to no hope of finding one that would have latency low enough for cloud gaming to stream well.

I have used Stadia since launch and its fine. I mean it adds a little extra latency 30 - 50 ms for 1080 gaming but 4k adds a little more. It's really game dependent. I prefer playing on my desktop.
I think the whole appeal for me was this powerful cloud gaming machine but it was really around ps 4 performance and below xbox, so doesn't really do much for me overall.
If you just want to play games... sure. It could be pretty cheap that way.

I've finished all of the first tomb raider on a 25 MB connection and had zero skips. So I think they services can work just fine. Playing on the phone and stuff is just not really my thing though. If anyone has questions about it, I can share my experience. I signed up for the Luna beta, but haven't tried it yet. The biggest issue is here in Michigan we have 1.26 TB data cap for Xfinity... and it's not worth it to add unlimited.

With bandwidth caps and unreliable DSL, I can't speak for others, but I've not been impressed with these cloud gaming services.

Wow that controller looks so much like the Switch Pro controller. I'd totally replace my X1 controller with that if it pairs easily.

The United States still relies way too heavily on anti-consumer datacaps for this to take off. Even with a gigabit connection the datacaps are stupidly low

What, does Amazon have no creativity? There's already Moonlight lol

I guess I have more trust in Amazon to pull this off effectively than I do Google. Then again, it feels like Amazon's been trying to break into video games for a while with pretty much nothing to show for it.

These services are really meant for people who travel frequently and stay at hotels that have good internet connections (which is kinda rare). I just fail to see any appeal for the home user when they could easily buy a console and/or used PC that would perform the same functions but much better and it wouldn't have the latency hit these cloud services do.
