This is something EVGA's always done, though. So I guess we shouldn't really be too surprised for the 3000 series. And I'll probably just throw a G12 +120 AIO on whichever card I end up with.. in which case the backplate won't be able to fit anyways.

Avoid the Black or whatever has no backplate. That's NOT good for this hot generation. The 3090 especially has memory modules on the back of the PCB. No backplate means no cooling on those chips. Great way to let them overheat and fry your $1500 card.

in most cases, the back plate acts as an insulator, and the back of the card will run hotter with the back plate than without it.
 
it's more for aesthetics than anything else.




Little old, but I was just watching this video last night on whether backplates cool your card or not.
 



 Ok but as they said this gen has mem modules on the back now. any heat dissipation at a bare minimum increases longevity.

Yeah, backplates usually cause more heat buildup. Only recently are they coming with proper 💻 style heat pipes.

The ASUS TUF is 699$. It comes with a backplate and an extra HDMI port. It also cools far better than the XC3. It's honestly disappointing that a non-backplate model exists.

Where did you hear that from?  
 
Wouldn't any thermal padded metal backplates dissipate heat with some case airflow?  I would tend to agree, even if its a few degrees plus, it's not cooling a processor back there.
 
If by heat buildup, you mean more heat added to the case, than you need decent airflow which should be taken care of with the rear case fan near by.

Sad to say, the 3090 (and I assume the 3080 has the same hole layout) is too narrow to fit the Kraken G10 or G12 bracket - I tried. The brackets are about a quarter inch or so too wide. Two holes line up, the other two are just too far out.
 
I emailed NZXT asking about a refresh that supports the 30 series, but I've not heard back in a week.

Did you try using the AMD bracket?

Why would Evga sell the black version if no back plate can cause overheat? Shouldn't warranty cover that? Also, it seems the perfect one to get for water cooling

Did you try using the AMD bracket?

The holes on the bracket/fan combo that holds the AiO cooler in place didn't line up, and I didn't feel like jerry-rigging anything.

Why would not having a backplate cause an overheat? Taking off the backplate for me has always yielded better temperatures in my very well ventilated case.
