Any type of pre-order would be great

Pre-orders would be fine, but there would be nothing stopping scalpers from lining up a few thousand times ahead of you.  Adding a 25% non refundable pre-order fee though.  That would reduce the overall buying power, and also probably put some soft limits on a lot of scalpers...  if you're getting in line 100 times, and essentially pre paying for 25 cards without any sort of guaranteed return on them might make you think twice about trying to buy everything you can.

They need to do something, and not just fixing their garbage website. I’m kind of glad I didn’t get a first batch card because of the whole CapGate issue, but that turned out to be fine.

But still - this is getting stupid. The Turing launch wasn’t nearly this bad.

The technological jump from pascal to turing wasn't as large, thus is why people are still rocking 1000 series cards.  So everyone who skipped the last generation is also trying to upgrade this generation.

But yeah..  Something definitely needs to be done to eliminate scalpers.

Nvidia likely won’t allow it.

Why is Nvidia so weird about how their cards are sold?

If the forums are monitored, and good solutions are suggested, and could be easily implemented, I don't see why they wouldn't be.  So...  Posts like these seem like they aren't really that much of a waste of time.  If even one card gets into the hands of a consumer instead of a bot because of the ideas that come out of a post like this, it was worth it.

There must be some rule in place against this.

I just imagine all these manufacturers agree to not allow preorders for some reason, maybe to keep everyone from buying one single brand, as all the others would suffer. It's an artificial way to keep demand all around, else there might only be EVGA or something... ?

Not really, but it could be worse.  From a tech standpoint, this is only going to be a very short term problem.  Release cycle of new tech is every 18 months or so.  Purchasing all the stock during that window isn't really feasible.  Eventually stock outpaces the resources of the scalpers, they can't continue to hold on to inventory that they can't move, so certainly can't pick up more.  At least we aren't dealing with an incredibly limited release, like the shoes that these bots were originally meant to grab.  These are shoes that are released in incredibly limited quantities, and bots are so prevalent that the entire community had to a completely different retail model to even attempt to combat scalpers.  Imagine having to show up to your local shop, to get a ticket to get entered into a raffle to get a video card.  You should up first, and then told that you might get one if your number gets pulled from a hat...  We don't have it that bad...  we just have to have patients and wait it out until it will no longer be profitable for scalpers to snatch up inventory that they can't get rid of.

I've been to shows and conventions that had queues for buying tickets. You get into the queue and it handles orders in batches. It is usually smoother than the free-for-all it's been trying to get a new Ampere card.
