I just got kinda forced into a upgrade, I had a 780 series motherboard that went bad and I got a z490 ftw for the warranty exchange. now I need a new processor and ramm maybe a cpu cooler. I’m on a pretty tight budget and haven’t built a pc in a long time. Just looking for some thoughts on what my best options are.

thanks!

Well needing other parts now kinda sucks but you sure got a good deal on a warranty exchange board from what you had.

What's your budget, I'm assuming you're in the US?  For CPU I'd probably go go for 10600k or 10700k and OC to 5GHz.  Memory maybe 3600-4400MHz depending on budget (like 80-130 dollars for 16GB).  Cooler Scythe Fuma 2 is pretty solid and should be fine at $60.

Look for CPU/Ram kits on sites like NewEgg. You get the best current price on the products and an additional discount on top of that when you buy kits.

If you go the i7 route...

For example... https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4091932

One with 3600 ram... https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4091928

More here... https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=i9-10700

i5 will cut your cost drastically for a CPU.

Unless it has LGA115X mounting bracket you'd have to mod it to get it to fit.

The 10400 CPU comes with a stock cooler though, you can just use that to be honest.

Second the Newegg bundle suggestion. I always say if you can afford to go better do it. It’ll last longer and the temptation to upgrade again won’t be there. For me anyway.
