I'm still running my old X58 system with an EVGA X58 Classified 3 motherboard (141-GT-E770-A1), and I'm looking to install a USB PCIe expansion card. With my 2x SLI setup, the only possible x4 slot is the third slot (marked PCIE_X8_2 on the board), in which I currently have my sound card. The sound card is only an x1 card, so I want to move it to the top x1 slot, but the damn fan on the heatsink (I think it's the northbridge?) blocks any card longer than about 2 inches.

My questions are:
A) Can this fan be mounted on the opposite side of the heatsink (I'm thinking the screws are just squeezed in between the fins without puncturing them)?
B) Is the fan absolutely necessary, and can it just be removed entirely?

Remove it like this?

It appears that you can either remove it or put it on the other side..See what it says at the bottom of my sig?

Keep an eye on the temp with some monitoring utility such as HWiNFO.

Yes, remove it like that, but that picture is a different model MB, is it not? There was another X58 MB that was almost identical to the Classified 3, but didn't have the fan on the heatsink if I remember correctly.

Yes, it does appear to be the same cooler as the Classified 3 that I have. I wonder why one has the fan and the other doesn't.
Anyway, I'm not even sure which temperature reading I should be monitoring...

Optional fan.

Intel calls it an IOH..Might be called an SPP or MCH (Northbridge) in software..Max temp is 100C.

You could get some of that double-sided tape and cut it real nice to fit around the fan frame and stick it to the cooler fins on the other side of the cooler..Be what I would do if there's room there for it.
