Hi X58 evangelists & other mobo series apologists  I wanted to share my experience with implementing an NMVe M.2 Samsung 970 EVO as a boot drive with my: - EVGA X58 4 Way SLI (E762) – The greatest generation of motherboards.
- CPU is Intel i7 980X (water cooled)
- Corsair DDR3 24GB RAM (3 x 8GB)
- GTX 690 + GTX 590 (water cooled)
You don't have to have a legacy compatible NVMe like the Samsung 950 by the way. All I needed was a: - Flash memory (32GB in my case) with small form factor for DUET…
- Samsung 970 EVO 512GB M.2 drive
- PCIe M.2 card to place the Samsung 970 EVO (512GB) (no power attachments required)…
Then follow the instructions from Fernando’s web site (and thanks to noINK user). Recommend using the command line options for set up. Also see Youtube for other visual instructions (thanks to rgray318): Once completed all you need to do is leave the USB DUET flash drive in any USB port on the back of X58 motherboard. Now if the M.2 drive has no partitions etc you will need to set this up initially then build the operating system. DUET should find the drive each time. If in doubt build the M.2 on another motherboard that is “Boot Compliant” for M.2 standard use. This works perfectly on one of the best boards EVGA ever made the X58 4 Way SLI Classified E762. Worth noting I did advise TechYESCity on youtube he is now successfully doing the same thing. NICE. I just tried this on my X58 system I have. It worked. You know I have to buy it its own m.2 now because I used the one from my laptop to try it. Thanks a ton though that is pretty cool. Funny thing is my x58 using all cores can match performance of many of today's mainstream cpus minus the new 6 and 8 core cpus. My cpu is a w3690 oced to 4.5ghz.

Excellent warcobra. Glad to be of help. The boot time on my X58 is very fast compared to the original SSD I had. Besides I can reduce the amount of SATA cables by running on PCIe as well. Enjoy!

nice videos. searching various forums about the x58 nvme boot found that : Samsung 950 Pro Plextor M8PEY Kingston HyperX Predator Boot without any mods,they have legacy boot rom ,so you can select the as boot device from the bios. i have done the job using samsung 950 pro works perfect.

Exactly right Samsung 950 is legacy compatible (as mentioned above). As stated its for those who are not using the 950 or can not get one as they are discontinued - what ever the case. It makes virtually any M.2 usable.

Really cool since the X58 was a great system and while I upgraded after a few years I think it's still what my parents are using since it works fine for checking email and basic web surfing that they do. They might install a M.2 drive into it to make it have some extra speed since while it does have the performance the speed at loading data is kind of slow but that is probably because I am so used to my system.

I run a 950pro, but very very much the cool stuffz.
How much time does booting off the USB flash bootloader add? I'm also curios what speeds you get Vs. the 950 pro.. Choose your benchmark and lets race! (lol) GOGOGO :D

I NEED HELP! The Samsung 950 Pro m.2 has been the PAIN IN THE A** of this upgrade... It recognized the drive, hell, it sees it in the bios at pretty much on what ever settings, but in order to get a windows 10 usb or dvd to start up was a nightmare. it took me hours. (I did NOT have any other drives connected when i did the install to the 950 pro m.2. (512gb)) I finally get windows 10 installed to the 950 pro, and went to put plug back in my sata ii raid setup, and i cannot get it to boot to the 950 Pro m.2. I need my raid stoage! Can someone that is running a raid off of their sata ii (storage not boot), that has one of these 950 pro m.2 installed (boot not storage), please tell me what their bios settings are??? I want to be able to run the 950 pro m.2 AND my 5 drive sata II raid. I don't want, or nee,d to boot to the raid, it is just storage. If i cant run both, ill have to go back to my sata III ssd and sell the 950 pro  Is this possible???? I cannot find anything that specifically states that you CANNOT run this 950 m.2 AND a sata ii raid at the same time. I tried doing DUET, but i could not get it running it would just set at the memory test for every (30+ minutes) and Duet would never come up. And the whole reason i bought the 950 m.2, is do i did NOT have to run DUET. But if that is the ONLY way that i will be able to run the 950 M.2 AND my Raid, then i guess ill have to. But i thought i would as around before i gave up on it. I spent hours on this last night getting the new hardware installed on my X58 Sli3 (e757 Bios 82) I installed a W3690, Oc'd it to 4.2ghz (33x133) at 1.35v and 24gb (3x8gb) Corsair 1600, clocked it at 1333mhz 9-9-9-24-200-1t. You can set the ram to what ever you want in the BIOS, BUT unless you have your BCLK above 133, it will NOT go above 2:10 at 667mhz (1333). That took me a while to figure out. I don't mind it at 1333mhz, as i really dont think ill ever see the performance real world between 1333 & 1600. CPU and Ram went extremely well and gave me no issues. I went to 4.4ghz, and then it started acting up, and i didnt want to bump voltages any higher, as this is a system that i usually leave running 24/7, and want to go run cooler and more stable. I just need to be able to run the m.2 as boot and have my raid storage there as well. Anybody know how to set up the bios to make that happen?

I have successfully setup my NVME boot drive with the following: - EVGA X58 4 Way SLI (E762) – The greatest generation of motherboards.
- CPU is Intel i7 980X (water cooled)
- Corsair DDR3 48GB RAM (6 x 8GB)
- GTX 580 + GTX 580 (water cooled)
- Flash memory (8GB ) with small form factor for DUET/REFIND
- Samsung 970 EVO PRO 1000GB M.2 drive
- PCIe x4 M.2 card NVME
The problem I'm having is the link speed on this mobo. On the EVGA SR-2 with the same exact hardware addons(different graphic card RTX2080 TI) I get full PCIe x4 bandwidth and benchmark read speeds of 1600-1700 MB/s. On the EVGA 4way classified I get read speeds of 800-880 MB/s. As you can see the report from HWINFO64, the link width is x4 but its performing as PCIE 1.1 As you can see the temperature is good so no temp throttling of the drive speed is occuring.   The GTX580 will idle at PCIE 1.1 2.5GT/s speeds but when stressed will increase back to full bandwidth PCIE 2.0 x16 5GT/s which is normal behavior but the NVME drive will not throttle up, regardless if graphic card running at full speed. NVME current link speed should be PCIE 2.0 x4 at 5GT/s, will not get 8GT/s since slot is not PCIE 3.0   I've installed samsung drivers, Windows 10 is at 1903. Even checked with new clean windows 10 install, no change still at slower bandwidth. I've tried different PCIE slots: (currently only GTX580 and PCIE adapter installed) PCIE 1 (x16): GTX580 PCIE 2 (x8): none PCIE 3 (x16): none PCIE 4 (x8): none PCIE 5 (x16): none PCIE 6 (x8): none PCIE 7 (x16): NVME PCIE x4 adapter Doesnt matter which slot the adapter is in, obviously with the 2 GTX580 would not place the adapter in adjacent x8 slot, but nothing changes the bandwidth. Bios CMOS reset to default values, so no overclocking. Have tried setting RC bridge, Memory gap --> 3g but to no avail. Can you share your speeds on your 4way classified? Is there a bios setting that will give me the PCIE 2.0 x4 bandwidth, i.e. link speed at 5GT/s? Does the DUET/Refind UEFI overlay bios take a long time to load(> 60 secs)? I've tried CLOVER UEFI and its a bit faster to load( <30 secs) but nothing compared to the EVGA SR-2 load times (< 5 secs) which has an AMBIOS bios. EVGA 4 way has a Phoenix bios (latest at 58). Any input would be helpful, Thanks!

Your welcome! I'd also like to report that DUET/REFIND UEFI loader can be installed on a SATA drive, avoids having to use a USB flash drive, if you have a spare SATA drive available. Can use the extra free space on the SATA drive for storage or whatever. Just remember the drive has to have MBR, has to be active and has to be set to boot. Cloning the flash drive onto the SATA drive as below sets up the partitions correctly to allow booting to DUET. You just set the BIOS to boot from that drive first.  You can also clone your existing system drive onto the NVME, but it does require you to set a GPT partition when cloning so that DUET recognizes the NVME drive.  Above is an example, obviously you would have an unformatted/unpartitioned NVME drive to clone to, or you can setup partitions using the wizard before hand and copy the relevant partitions to your NVME. I used Minitool Partition Wizard to do this. This worked for both my EVGA SR-2 and 4way classified(e-762). The problem I have not solved yet is the E762 bandwidth limitation and why I only get PCIE 1.1 x4 link speeds. There are no problems on the SR-2 as I had mentioned. Obviously there are other methods to do the above with other tools like Rufus, Diskpart, etc. I found this the easiest way.

Hmm, I'll have to time my current setup, that video doesn't make m.2 nvme seem any faster than my old c300.
I've been wanting a larger boot drive and faster drive than my old spinner for file transfers, etc and came across using nvme drives instead.
Not sure if it's worth the investment yet. My overall boot time from power on/reset isn't too horrible but not like todays computers/laptops. But if i time from boot screen to initial windows as posted in the video, I'm not so sure nvme is faster using duet.
As much as i don't want raid, an lsi raid card and sata 3 drives should net the same performance, shouldn't it? I have the original sr-2's from when they first came out way back when along with some of the first x5670 es cpu's. Used to run@4.2ghz (on air) 24/7 for folding, mining, world community grid, etc. I was the top producer back in the day.
Anyway, i have 2 of these sr-2 systems in a custom mountain mods case and they still do everything i need (no reason to upgrade till they die). Main system hasn't been turned off in at least 9 yrs or whatever it's been.
I'm just trying to see if it's worth the effort to do something with the drives for a boost in performance. I finally installed all my ram bringing me to 48gb even though I don't think I use nearly that much; the 24gb seemed to have been plenty for my current use, but thought I'd give it a try.

I don't know if that is the right way to go. Maybe make a backup of your Windows 7 drive. Install windows 7 and then transfer the backup later.

Maybe one of you can help me. I have been struggling to get m.2 working on my x58 sli. It is a e758 rev1.0 board.
I have used different pcie adapters and have tested the 950 pro on a new mobo with an onboard m.2 slot. The 950 pro works in that board. But I have not been able to get it working on my x58. It doesn't even recognize the nvme in the bios.
Are there some specific settings I need to change besides ahci?
Can it be that the adapters don't work with ahci and I need a different one?

have you try with only the nvme attached to the pc ,no other drives installed?

I sure have. Unfortunatelly it still does not recognize the 950 pro. Windows does not recognize it either.

you can add a sata hdd or ssd with windows ,boot and see if you can see the nvme drive.

If I connect the boot drive (sata ssd) and connect the 950 pro, only the boot drive showes up in windows.
