Hello guys. Recently got a 2080 Super KO.

Not really enjoying any games because I can clearly hear the GPU fans through my headset unless I turn up the volume all the way up and audio is blasting.

No matter what I set the fan speeds to on MSI Afterburner, the game ramps up the speeds once it's at about 60-62c. Afterburner will say they stayed at say 50% in the monitoring section. But they're definitely not, I hear it roar like a plane sometime. I'll turn to 50% (example) on the desktop and then start a game and in 30 seconds it's roaring lol.

As soon as the game is off, they go back to reasonable speeds. I've tried different fan curves and it always ramps up to a very loud setting every time no matter what I try. Lowered my target 10c+ and power by 30, still the same. Tried EVGA Precision as well, no luck. Obviously if it's getting hot I'm not planning at keeping them low and just baking the card, but it doesn't seem right that no matter what settings I choose, it fires up like a jet at 60-62c consistently.

Any suggestions? Is this normal? Should I try another? I'll take any help. Thanks.

Mobo is an MSI Z490.

That seems to be the case, correct. If I see it to 50%, it starts to sound more more 70 or so, but Afterburner says it's staying static. I've monitored the fan rpms too, which like the percentage, claim to be static.

I will do that, I'll update here with what they tell me in case anyone else can be helped by it.

Strange because it's barely been a week or so. Originally it didn't do this (at least as far as I know) it would seem to follow the fan curve. While it still was loud, it was worth it for the performance it gave. Now, it's simply unbearable. Just not even worth it unfortunately. Hoping EVGA can help. Thank you by the way.

Okay, I've had some more time to play around with this today. I reinstalled MSI Afterburner and still had the issue. BUT I turned the power limit down to 70% and that's definitely making a HUGE difference.
 
For example: Set fans to 50%. I booted up Gears 5 when the power limit was at default, or 100%. Eventually the fans went nuts, full on jet engine. Monitoring software said they were at 50%, but they sounded similar to setting them at 70-80, maybe more.
 
Turned the power limit down to 70. Temp limit it 79c. So far (and those are the key words), it's running at a reasonable rate and keeping the fans at a sane level.
 
So my question is, am I going to see a huge performance decrease by turning my power limit down to 70? Obviously I'll figure that on my own, but I've never messed with that slider before, so I'm curious how much it can alter performance. Thank you for any and all help!

Haven't played enough yet to verify for sure, but so far it seems like it still runs similarly well, at a lower temp and without roaring fans. Getting 70-90 on Hitman 2 maxed out, 120-144 on Gears 5, and 70-90 on Breakpoint maxed out. All at 1440p and HDR on. So, I'll update support when they get back to me and continue to keep on eye on my performance and whatnot.

Edit: Notice when I run 3D mark with the power limit at 100%, the fan doesn't go crazy. Every single game I play though, it does. Very bizarre.

Have you tried or are you running or the new (with 'Various bug fixes')?

When uninstalling, select NOT to save settings when prompted..Then install again.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just tried them and it still overrides the fans at around 50c and starts going nuts.
 
I've tried uninstalling every piece of software and reset my bios settings too. I'm going crazy, I don't know what's going on. Been in light contact with EVGA, just want a replacement at this point as I believe I have a faulty card. On another forum, I ran into 1 other person who had very similar issues and he got a new card and that fixed it.

Okay, the real problem may be my brain. There is a chance, and get ready to laugh at me and call me names, that the noise is actually coming from the PSU fans.
 
I have a Corsair CX750M. I'll have to play around more tomorrow after work to be sure, but I'm starting to think this may be the case. If so, please desgniate me the dumbest user on this website. I just recently upgraded to this PSU, GPU and a new CPU with a 1440p 144hz monitor for the first time. Is a PSU like this necessary to play at 1440p ~100 frames, or are there just as capable ones that run quieter (assuming this is the issue, we'll see lol).

Meh, stuff happens..Always has happened..Always will happen.

What you can do is create a Profile with a low manually fixed fan speed in Precision or Afterburner and assign a Hotkey to the Profile..When it gets loud, press the Hotkey to load the low manual fan speed Profile and see if the noise is reduced or goes away.

Don't leave the fan speed fixed though, just do that for testing purposes..You can create another Profile/Hotkey for normal fan speed operation in the same manner..Then you can simply switch between the two.

If it's a noisy PSU, we'll deal with that later.

Yeah.... 99% sure it's the PSU. I mostly assumed it was the GPU, as I've never heard a PSU fan like that before. I just figured since the CPU AIO is fine and a game is running, the fan noise I'm hearing simply must be the graphics card. Wasn't until I stuck my hand under the case and noticed that fan noise change and was like...... welp, ****, that's what it is. I knew it was there, just never had a problem or fan noise from the PSU before.
 
If I place it upside down with the intake fan towards the inside of the case rather than the bottom and it's much quieter. When the fan is close to a surface it causes the noise to be louder. To be fair, it's on a glass table with an AC vent right underneath, so not like it's on carpet or anything. Still louder than the GPU sometimes, but waaaaaaay better. Gonna check out another brand of PSU one day though.

When the fan is facing upwards if the GPU is heating up it basically sucks hot air into the PSU and out the back. Whenever a case has vent/meshing at the bottom of the case, it's always recommend to place downwards to pull cool air from the outside into the PSU. Glad to hear that the sound has gone down however.

If it's better with the fan side up and you're OK with the noise, leave that way..Also, some people with a clear side panel find the idea of having the PSU sticker showing upside down absolutely abhorrent so they mount the PSU fan side up so the sticker isn't showing upside down if that's the way the sticker is put on.

FINAL UPDATE: I'm dumb, it wasn't the GPU. It was the PSU fan, which only got this loud when games ran over 60FPS on my 1440p monitor.

I purchased a Seasonic PSU that was also 750 watts, the same as my Corsair CX750M that I was having the noise issue with. The Seasonic PSU has two fan options, normal and hybrid. Both are insanely quieter than the CX750M's only mode.
My 2080 Super can finally be used to its full potential with the PSU running like a jet lol.

For a medium to high end GPU, I wouldn't use one of the lowest tier of PSUs for future references.  CX line is at the lower bracket and that's usually designed for basic builds with low tier GPUs, etc.

If I had to guess, the Seasonic PSU is going to have higher quality components which will handle thermals better and come with better cooling and audibles.
