I am in process of building my new rig and noticed the 2 slots are labeled different (see picture below). One is labeled as "M.2 KEY-M(1)" at bottom of board, and the other is labeled as "M.2 Key-M(2) - PCIEx4/SATA 1" near the graphics PCIE slot.  I am installing a Samsung NVME 960 Evo Plus.

I am new to M.2 as my previous rig was 2.5" drives.

Thanks in advance!

Nice motherboard! You have Samsung NVME 960 Evo Plus of course support NVME not SATA? You can use M.2 (2) this slot can support NVME and SATA so the bottom M.2 1 and 2 are support Intel Optane if you have one!
Have a look in your Manal book for Z490 FTW  page 23 and page 30
Hope it help you
