You may remember Nimbus Data's Exadrive, which was announced back in 2018 to claim the crown of world's densest SSD solution with a full 100 TB capacity crammed into the usual 3.5" form-factor and SATA connection as most (now) budget drives. At the time, pricing was available via a direct quote only. now, the company has changed that paradigm and is yelling straight at customers' wallets.

Cutting expectations short, and yet somehow supplanting them, Nimbus Data's Exadrives can be yours for the low, low price of $40,000 for a 100 TB version (a clean-looking $400 per TB). the 50 TB version is slightly saner when it comes to pricing: it only goes up to the $250 per TB barrier, costing a mundane $12,500. Of course, this is enterprise-grade MLC NAND providing read/write speeds rated at 500 & 460 MB/s, respectively, and up to 114,000/105,000 IOps reads/writes.

Well if you've got 40,000 dollars to blow here is your SSD.

While these prices may seem crazy - anyone who’s ever had a cloud account... with *any* provider... knows the panic attack inducing fear of opening that first “go-live” bill.

For genuine enterprises, $40k is nothing compared to the cost of cloud. Building a 4U colocated data server to meet a fully redundant petabyte demand is now feasible.

Public midsized companies can easily spend $50k per month on cloud. That’s where this makes sense.

I'm not sure most cloud or enterprise environments would want 100TB of data on one SSD though. That is a lot of data to have to restore if one kicks the bucket.

100% agree. I think the customers would be those companies that want to move *away* from cloud hosting to back on-site or colocated.

The fact that it is a MLC controller (assume 2-bit?) means very durable.

But even if you RAID-01 these things - it’s *still* less $$$ than cloud.

AWS, Microsoft, Google... Wall Street is overjoyed with their cloud profits. Guess who’s paying for it...

It's not really for the home user but it does have a lot of storage at 100TB and the price per TB is still high but not crazy for a single drive solution.

RAID 1 requires exactly 2 discs. Still pricey, but for companies paying $100k / month for cloud - very much worth it.

Unless you’ve actually seen a cloud bill for a medium sized enterprise - you have no idea.

I know personally of a medium size petrochemical company with ops in Houston that dropped AWS and built their own $50 million data center (with on-premises sap hana cloud). A compact drive like this decreases the footprint of that data center by several racks - 10’s of square meters - or more. You’re talking actual reduction in footprint / building size. 5 - 4U servers become 1.

Too late for them... but... That’s huge.

It may be early, but not outrageously priced cost / benefit.

    I see what you're saying.

Won't that also reduce power consumption?  Less drives used for one big one and spindle replacements, etc.

I would imagine yes, that too. Although ssd’s are very power frugal already,

    Neat idea.

You could cram 24 sata SSD's into a 3x 5-1/4" drive bays with these:

    https://www.techpowerup.com/248395/icy-dock-introduces-rugged-8-bay-2-5-hdd-ssd-drive-enclosure

Total cost for 96GB raw about $15K with controller card and some decent 4GB drives.

Micron has 30TB U.2 SSD products and they are lot cheaper and faster. Only around $10,000 for one.

They should be available in the not too distant future.  15TB is about $3,000 right now

The Samsung PM1643 is a dull, unassuming name for this SAS SSD, but it’s one to remember. The device doubles the capacity of the previous 15.36TB high-capacity SSD that Samsung introduced nearly two years ago.
