GPUs as a removable/upgradable "chip" are a fun idea, it's not like the video out or VRM changes any between the majority of generations... and people could even re-use their coolers or waterblocks too, which overall would cut down significantly on the cost of upgrading cards. Would be amazed if it ever happened in the consumer space though.  

I don't think that the core will be socketed, but I could be proven wrong. Usually they are only socketed during the engineering sample phase, but soldered in the final product to increase reliability, reduce price, and reduce physical (vertical) size.

Intel plans to keep them socketed for the server-side of Xe HPC deployments. It also means all Intel has to do is validate designs as they do with CPUs, they don't have to build cards or PCBs themselves.

With what you just said about Intel not having to build the cards/PCBs themselves, you know this sounds extremely similar to their CPU/motherboard business, right?  You know the result of that: new sockets and forced upgrades at every possible opportunity in order to satisfy the vendor who creates the PCBs.
 
So, you see, the one quote invalidates the other quote.

You actually got me thinking.  I wonder if EVGA will take part in making Intel based GPUs.

I doubt consumer parts will be socketed designs, but that would be a fun idea if EVGA sold Intel GPUs.

If you're assumption is true, then sure. But Intel doesn't invalidate it's Xeon compatibility on a forced 1 or 2 year cycle so why would it for the Xe platform either? I am simply pointing out that there is a reason Intel exited the consumer+server motherboard business. There used to be a time when Intel was the go-to choice for motherboard brands if people prized stable, solid platforms above overclocking or gamer features.

Big blue has serious $$$ and can accomplish that out of the gate
they have more patents and designs and engineers than anyone else
$$$ gets you IP rights
 
 
Money can get you in the game...it's intel's pricing and marketing that needs work
