Hello every one!

Let me list all my parts before I describe the problem.

My parts:

CPU – 8700K
MB – ASUS Z370-A
RAM – Corsair Vegeance 3200, 16-18-18-36
GPU – EVGA 2070 FTW 3 ULTRA STOCK
PSU – EVGA Supernova 1000 G+
HDD- Toshiba 3TB
Optical drive - pioneer
SSD – Crucial MX500 1 TB
2xM.2

Built it myself in August 2018. All parts were brand new.

Power supply had 12 years warranty at the time of purchase.

OK….

Making  a short story long…

It happened few weeks ago. I have switched my PC on and spark came out from back of the case. A loud pop sound has also been heard.
I have pressed the power button again but nothing happened then i opened the case. A white LED located next to the power button on the motherboard was still on. Pressed this button – nothing.

Then i placed case on the table to gain better access and view. Done self test of the PSU using the thing that came with the power supply. There were pop and spark but fan of the PSU were spinning fine, fans in my case were spinning too.
Please see the video:

I have tested all the lines of PSU with multimiter and 3.3V, 5V, 12V were fine.
Then i have removed PSU from the case and self tested it again with the same results. – Pop, spark, spinning fan.

I had access to a friend's PC, old one with new PSU. Connected PSU to it but nothing happened. I was not able to start it.
Then i connected his Corsair RM1000W  to my PC and nothing happened. Then I used friend’s PSU. It was EVGA 1000W P2 and again it didn’t start my PC. At that point i realised that my motherboard is dead. I was not sure what is the condition of the other components.

I started RMA process. All went nice, could be a bit faster. Entered advanced RMA on 6/06/20020, received replacement on 17/06/2020. 11 Days, not bad!

I phoned customer service many times during that time to find out what happen next. For example i have been told that based on the results of investigation i can get compensation for the damages caused by the faulty PSU. They told me that investigating faulty product takes up to five days.
But yesterday they told me that PSU is completely dead and the technician was not willing to power it due to burnt part inside. Please see photos.

2 Days ago I was advised to send them an email explaining everything in detail. I did. I also described what lack of PC means to me and my family.

This is not a high end PSU but still cost me about 150 pounds. I expected it to protect my parts that in total were worth almost 2000 pounds.

Can anyone tell me if EVGA is going to resolve this problem? Will they send me replacement?

Waiting for such a long time is really frustrating.

Thanks

Pat

Only EVGA can tell you what they are going to do. As end users are the primary users of this forum, we can only speculate. Stay in touch with EVGA, and let them answer you back.

This is the problem. I have been waiting long enough. And now they are going to make me wait even longer by sending faulty PSU somewhere to a factory. Customer service told me that the investigation takes up to 5 days.

This is not a simple replacement of damaged product because the product that I bought to protect my PC killed it.

What i can't understand is that after explaining what happened during the first phone call (04/06/2020) they did nothing in order to get my pc back to live.

I cant use my PC because PSU that was supposed to protect it damaged it. Situation like this one should have priority over normal replacement (in fact replacement went quite nicely, apart from a screw that is not screwed all the way in and damaged warranty sticker)

I cant even check if the replacement is working. I dont know if something else has been damaged...

This is really bad.

While I completely understand your frustration, all anyone can do is wait. EVGA does not make power supplies in house. They make specifications and a power supply manufacturer makes the power supply for them, to the specifications. Gamers Nexus has a fantastic video about the process on YouTube.

I completely understand not having a computer is very difficult, but there isn’t much that can be done without a proper investigation and results. As stated, EVGA is the only one that will be able to give you the answer. I have already sent up a request for someone to look into this and contact you, but it is still going to take time.

Hello patfial! I was able to look into your RMA and it looks like you will need to work with our EU support team on this. I have forwarded them your information so they can look further into this and they should be able to reach out to you once they are able to investigate.

Far as PSU's. I stick to Corsair's RM series, and Seasonic. eVGA's quality has seriously been lacking passed 5-6 years, just got my first non eVGA gpu in ten years, and the quiet high quality of my new gpu is far superior to evga.  IMOO, evga needs to get back to its roots, and tell their holding company to buzz off.....

Thanks for helping me with the links and for moving my thread to proper section.

I have watched the video on how psu are made. Very interesting and sad. Sad because they say that psu that cant be fixed are send to China....

Few more weeks of waiting?

Nooooo.

Any idea how to speed it up? Have you ever experienced a similar problem?

Reviews about EVGA on trustpilot.uk are not nice and i am starting to see why.

I have never experienced a similar problem with an EVGA power supply. The only power supply I have had fail is an older Enermax PSU.

There is no way to speed up the process.

Use the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator to get a good estimate of your system's wattage need, then just buy another unit that's 'good enough' for the time being.

If you have homeowners or renters insurance, that may cover the damages to your PC.

Re: 120-GP-1000-X3 Killed my motherboard. 2020/06/23 00:50:15 (permalink)
Sadly none of above will work for me. I don't have home/renter insurance.

To make this clear i would like you guys to know that EVGA done well. They send me replacement quick enough and this is what they need to do. So this part of the RMA is sufficiently fulfilled.

The second part is more complicated and takes much more time. EVGA can do basic tests of their products in Europe, Germany. This is what they did. Technician "tested" faulty psu in Germany. Customer service informed me that technician found faulty component inside the psu but can not tell how and why psu damaged my motherboard. For much more complex tests products must be send back to factory. In my example they'll send it to China.

I guess it is cheaper to send faulty items back to a factory than investing in testing equipment in Germany.

Re: 120-GP-1000-X3 Killed my motherboard. 2020/06/23 06:29:27 (permalink)
Partial,

As discussed in my second reply, EVGA does not make power supplies. It is one thing to have a basic tester, but as EVGA does not make the power supply, they would not be able to diagnose the exact cause of failure. This has nothing to do with cost, and everything to do with the manufacturer that builds the unit to EVGA’s specification having to provide the warranty.

I’m sorry to hear it is going to take so long.

Re: 120-GP-1000-X3 Killed my motherboard. 2021/03/17 05:28:24 (permalink)
Its been a while.....

EVGA will not pay for the damage to the motherboard as I have already received replacement from the shop. I had to pay the difference between motherboards, about 50 pounds but EVGA wont pay it either.

I explained everything, with all the details in my emails. EVGA kept asking for the photos of the damaged MB and i kept saying that there was no visible damages. I have sent you the video of the sparks coming from the PSU. I have send you the video of the MB (the way i packed it for shipping to the retailer). I have send you conversation between me and the shop i bought the components from. All that was not good enough for you.

Just few minutes ago I talked to the customer support. He explained to me why EVGA wont pay for the damages.

I asked the guy what happened to the faulty PSU. He said that they run the investigation but there was no visible damage to the faulty PSU!!!! When i said that he is lying because i took pics of the damages he then said that there was no visible damage to the PSU but there was visible damage to the component.

I also asked him if he can specify what component failed and what was it responsible for. - You know the answer...

He also told me that i should of sent the motherboard to the manufacturer for their investigation...., and wait few months for the results. Few month without PC.... Few months without work, PC, internet, entertainment.

ARE YOU CRAZY?

The replacement of the faulty PSU was nice and fast. The PSU itself came used (that's normal) with one screw not fully in the screw hole and warranty sticker slightly damaged. They forgot to return my money after receiving faulty PSU so i had to rang them...

What would of happened if the sparks that came out from the PSU started the fire.... Very unlikely but imagine this: you set up your PC for a benchmark or video editing and you go out....

In summary - buy the house/private insurance before you buy EVGA PSU.

Customer count = minus one.

OH No, no, no, no.... i still got that PSU and 2070 both with extended warranty.....

Hi Patfial,

as mentioned already by email, ticket we need to check the PSU by our engineering team in Taiwan / Factory - through several EVGA Safety Protections like (Over Power Protection, Over Voltage Protection, Under Voltage Protection, Short Circuit Protection, Over Current Protection, Over Temperature Protection), almost impossible nowadays, that any component get damaged, as by any fault the safety switch trips and the PSU turns off, before damaging any part. We will let u know, after we do have the full report from our engineering team.

Regards,

Hello.

Over 15 months passed since the PSU failure and 13-14 months since you received faulty PSU. I am sure that flawless evga managed their engineering team to finish the report. I would love to see the report.

They lost me as a customer (still got 1060 FTW3 and 2070 FTW Ultra, PSU all with extended warranty) and they lost 4 other potential customers. Two of them are my close friends and the other two are players that i met recently.

On every single occasion i will tell how you deal with such problems in real life.

All that time on the phone, emails..... you are crap.

Hope i will not deal with you again.

Good buy!
