Getting More work out of your hardware Per clock cycle Some like to tinker .. see what they can get out of their hardware ... its an adventure Better Gaming ... try for every last FPS Bragging rights .... Records on Benchmarks ..... move up the list

Because overclocking is free performance upgrades if you know how to do it.

in the past, I liked the challenge. It was more difficult. Now, much easier. You do get more out of your hardware. In fact, I have my CPU overclocked to 5.2 ghz. I could push it more, but meh. But since I started this back in 2013, things are so much faster with a stock CPU, so I see your point of just buying a fast processor and being done with it. Today, I want my cpu fast, quiet and longer life. Maybe I'm getting old.

I don't see the need...my 9900k can run games at Frame rates (coupled with the 2080Ti) that far exceed my ability to see as it is...so I can get a few more FPS?
I still can't see it. I'm fine at stock.

Overclocking does more than just raise your max or average frame rates in games. It also raises your minimum frame rates which is far more noticeable. It can help smooth out the dips and make them less impacting while gaming.

Think of it as a lottery. You spend less and gain more in terms of performance. Except, unlike lotteries, overclocking has a near 100% winning chance.

I completely understand the OP, nowadays overclocking is just for the fun. The regular computer user does not even need to know what it is or how does it work. Good old times when you only had a e6600 and 8800gt and had to juice it up to play Crysis.

freakdaddy64 im not a tech guru and i see alot of talk on overclocking can someone explain to me what the big deal is i mean if i have a 3.6 cpu that can overclock to 4.0 why wouldnt i buy a 4.0 cpu, if i have 3200 ram that can overclock to 3600 why not just buy 3600 ram im sorry i dont get it.
Simplest explanation using your example is, if your 3.6 CPU can do 4.0, then why would you WANT to buy the 4.0? If you can make the 3.6 run at 4.0 for the cost of buying the cheaper CPU then that was one of the original points behind OC. Getting more for your money. Same with the RAM. If you have some really nicely binned 3200 RAM that can be clocked up to 3600, then again that's potentially some $$$ saved and you're still getting more performance. It's basically a way to get the equivalent of a more expensive part when you can't actually afford to buy the more expensive part. Then as others have mentioned, some do it just because it's the PC version of modding cars/etc. so bragging rights, tinkering, etc. The DRAM calculator thread over on overclock.net is a good example. Most of that stuff is not super noticeable real world but people will tweak the heck out of their RAM and post memory benchmarks because they can and they enjoy it.
