Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds revealed that he upgraded to an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X processor powered machine after 15 years of upgrading among Intel processors. This is likely his main machine from which he does pioneering work on the future of Linux and his other creations. His May 24 dated "State of the Kernel" blog post reveals that his hardware upgrade was the most exciting piece of news to share among the community.

"In fact, the biggest excitement this week for me was just that I, upgraded my main machine, and for the first time in about 15 years, my desktop isn't Intel-based. No, I didn't switch to ARM yet, but I'm now rocking an AMD Threadripper 3970x. My 'allmodconfig' test builds are now three times faster than they used to be, which doesn't matter so much right now during the calming down period, but I will most definitely notice the upgrade during the next merge window," he stated. What makes this story big is the fact that the "Zen 2" microarchitecture, and a processor with a similar multi-core architecture to AMD's EPYC enterprise processors, is now being used by the creator of the most popular enterprise operating system.

I think this speaks of high praise when Torvalds switches processors.

    Increase 3x the performance? 😳😮

    Go AMD go ye😼.

I'm glad to see the AMD competition, it is good for the consumer as well.

It's how tech works. They're like used cars. Stupid hidden things in warranty fine print. They're worth half what you bought it for right when you drive it off the lot and there is always a new one next year with some feature you wanted now but marketing screwed up and confused you into buying the current one instead of waiting instead.

My particular example of this nonsense is try to find a 43" UHD 4kTV that has FreeSync, bluetooth capable sound, HDR, low latency and decent build quality for my desktop. It doesn't exist but marketing will make you think it does.

I am personally not AMD over Intel because I want both brands to be better since if Intel doesn't push AMD why would AMD keep improving?

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

A picture of my desk as reference. I really do need at 43”, not larger.

Here is the gotcha though, you really have to dig. Samsung doesn't make a 4KTV in 43" with FreeSync in any series of their 2020 model TVs. Sure the QLED ones have it, but only in their 55" and larger ones. The devil is in the details. I seriously can't find a one in 43" that has all the specs I want. My desk is a 48" wide desk, a 55" would overwhelm that desk. I currently have a 43" VIZIO on it that is flaking out that needs replaced.

Vizio is a great.choice for the budget customer.
I wont be surprised to see in the fall the release of the TV you are looking for Brad.

2006 was the Core 2 Duo launch, so 15 years on Intel is pretty typical for a lot of people. I haven't used AMD since the Thunderbird era, so it's been over 20 years on Intel. That is going to end with Zen 4 next year.

Imagine an evga SR series board for two 64 core epyc chips. Something like an e762 with loads of full x16 slots AND a mess of m.2 nvme slots around the board.

    Sigh, a man can dream.

I kinda want one just to toss a mess of the 4x m.2 add on cards in and use a bunch of smaller cheap stupid fast nvme drives in raid at pcie 4 speeds.

Never gonna happen unless EVGA makes huge changes.  Shamino left long ago.  And now TiN is gone.  EVGA has no more innovators on its payroll.  When the big ones you know about get pushed out, you have to believe that it is EVGA's wish to chase mainstream mediocrity.

They still have Kingpin part of the team.

Yep, that is why I said it should be interesting.

Kingpin isn't an engineer. "Shamino" and "TiN" were engineers. What is Kingpin going to benchmark when the talented designers are gone?

Exactly, that is why he said the next kingpin card should be interesting.... we have no idea who will design it.

I kinda want one just to toss a mess of the 4x m.2 add on cards in and use a bunch of smaller cheap stupid fast nvme drives in raid at pcie 4 speeds.

I do that already. I have 2 of the ASUS x16 4 M2.NVME cards in my machine.

Now imagine instead of two you have 6x or maybe 7x fully populated at pcie gen 4 speeds.

X399 Designare EX, Threadripper 1950x, Overkill Water 560mm dual pass radiator. Heatkiller IV Block Dual 960 EVO 500gb Raid 0 bootable, Quad Channel 64gb DDR4 @ 2933/15-16-16-31, RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra, Corsair RM850x, Tower 900

No, he didn't say that. He is not Sajin. Sajin said that.
