Hello everybody,

I am sorry if this has already been asked a lot, but I can't find more info in the forum for the following question :

I currently have a Win10 PC setup with only an onboard audio chip (an Asus Z710 pro Gaming with what seems to be an ALC1150 realtek codec/chipset).
I recently upgraded from a HiFi micro music system (Philips DCM3020) connected via 3.5 mini jack to a soundbar (Samsung HW Q80R) connected via SPDIF cable.
That alone has been a world of change for my ears.
However I feel some saturation/flatness in the sound coming out from Games as well as some breakups.

My realtek settings are on Dolby Home Theater/Dolby Digital Live (5.1 surround).

I have contemplated getting an internal audio card and from what I gather, EVGA has the most stable drivers compared to Creative and Asus audio cards.

So my question is : will moving from that onboard audio chip to a dedicated internal audio card be a step up or just overkill and with no real difference when hooked via SPDIF cable ? (the headset I use sometimes being an Audio Technica ATH M40x)

Well first off SPDIF is digital so the 1 and 0 are being transmitted to the soundbar and then processed by the soundbar. As long as the signal hits the soundbar you will get the audio the same. However over a 3.5mm jack you would notice an improvement. It's a nice step up that I think you would notice if you are using an analog connection.

Absolutely zero difference.  Not just "no real difference".  Plain and simply, zero difference.  S/PDIF is digital.  It comes straight from your CPU and will be identical regardless of which S/PDIF connector you use.

With an analog signal to your headphones, you should hear a difference.

This is a Audiophile grade card. that uses analog audio throught the speaker output and headphone output. digital audio will make no difference.
