When the Nu Audio Pro Surround card is connected to a PCIe slot, does it use any PCIe lanes, or is it just drawing power from the board?

Yes, of course it uses PCI-e lanes.  How else do you think that it could communicate with your CPU?

To clarify, I'm talking about the Surround card itself.  I'm wondering if it just communicates over the Displayport cable, or if it is also communicating with the CPU over PCIe.

AFAIK, the additional surround card is only drawing power from PCI-E. Not 100% sure though.
What do you have in mind? We may have a common trouble here...

Oh... I see. I am not sure.

Looks like the Answer is No
"The NU Audio Pro Surround Card receives both its power and data through the mini-DisplayPort Cable connected to the NU Audio Card."

Step 4

Fasten the NU Audio Pro Card and/or the NU Audio Pro Surround Card with screws. Connect the mini-DisplayPort cable to both cards if you now have both the NU Audio Pro Card and NU Audio Pro Surround Card in your system. Regardless of configuration, you must have a NU Audio Pro Card in your system for the NU Audio Pro Surround Card to work properly. The NU Audio Pro Surround Card receives both its power and data through the mini-DisplayPort Cable connected to the NU Audio Card.
