Can anyone see anything wrong with trying the old bowl of ice water trick for cooling rad down to run benchmarks? I know some use all sorts of tricks ( liquid nitrogen and the like )

Only thing wrong is that if your room isn't as cold as the bucket if ice water, water will condense on the surfaces of the tubing and heatsink, and if the condensation causes the heatsink to discolor or corrode in any way, or it drips or wicks onto your video card PCB, it will void your video card's warranty.

Jayz2Cents actually did it :) They "cheated" their cooling with aircooler blowing directly into rads and also they tired to place radiator inside bath with ice water. But I believe that that was not just water with ice - they mentioned dry ice and how it is actually dangerous for human skin etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh8NTmxu6VI

I think I'll just stick with my chiller to get my liquid temps that cold, much more reliable. sounds like a new drink, hey bartender I'll have a kingpin on the rocks.

A bucket of dry ice and acetone will get you down to around -100°F (-78 °C). It's pretty easy to get both, so it is a really effective and inexpensive route to make some hectic benchmark runs. In contrast, a chiller or phase change cooler with similar capabilities can easily cost you over $1000. The other bonus is that it just uses standard water cooling components, so it doesn't need special blocks like liquid nitrogen requires. The acetone remains a liquid and greatly improves heat transfer between the dry ice and radiator. If you just put the radiator in dry ice, you won't get very impressive results, because the dry ice will rapidly sublimate wherever it touches the radiator and then you will just have an air pocket surrounding the radiator and no thermal contact. But, any below ambient cooling needs proper preparation. The GPU PCB should be plasti-dipped, or coated in vaseline, or covered in kneadable art eraser, or a combination of all three. And the hoses should be covered in insulative tubing. And the waterblock should be insulated against ambient air contact. And if we are talking way below zero, you will need special coolant; antifreeze is a coolant option, or isopropyl alcohol (not acetone because it will craze acrylic and cause it to crack) and water mix is a good, but slightly dangerous coolant option.

Yeah I can get down to about -5C with my chiller and humidity in the room at about 25% so I can benchmark for a few hours with very little condensation. Since I'm using the ekwb vga supremacy mod the only contact is the die itself and the air movement from the high rpm vrm fan on the kingpin actually evaporates the moisture on the block since it's so small. It's quite interesting.

I've got a 4U rack case with the AIO/hybrid rads on the front fan intake positions. Can I safely stick it out a window in sub freezing temps - sitting on a window sill, intaking outside air? All the air in the case will be cold from outside drawn through the rads, will that make condensation minimal?

as long as you do not react the dew point inside your room - humidity in the "sealed room" could be much higher just run the PC in a room with an open window would avoid the issue

I would think so, the closer the liquid temp to ambient temp around it the less condensation there is. I'm not sure how low of temps the fluid and pumps in the aio are good for though.

It actually worked . Broke my record with superpostion by quite a bit. The window was open , AC got ambient down to 20 and I also had a portable AC blower on it . Next time I try this , I will get some desiccant bags from work and put those in the case as well. It helped being able to run my i9 9900ks 5.6GHz@1.445v

You should run some Port Royal and time spy extreme benchmarks that's pretty much the most popular benchmarks comparison . Gotta get on that futuremark Hof chart. https://www.3dmark.com/ha...nce+preset/version+1.0

That portable AC unit I bought on Gumtree for $50 and with the room AC running and window open to expel hot air from portable unit , I see no risks. It's a cheap extreme cooling solution and it works , big time. Problem we have in Perth is the summer temps . Doesn't drop much below 35 and gets up to 45. Just put 600 on that score so it works.

What chiller are you using? How's the noise? Buying one has been something I've been considering.

I'm using the koolance EXC-800 chiller. I just use it for benching it has 3 fans on it. You can hear the compressor kick in and out when it does and the fans are not to bad in my opinion but whats not to bad to me could be way to loud for others.

I have a Koolance EXC 800. The noise is not that bad , not silent but you can live with it . Excellent bit of kit and I would recommend. Bit of advice , don't take it down too low because of condensation . It will go all the way down to 0 but don't, unless you live in an igloo . https://koolance.com/exc-...-recirculating-chiller

The condensation depends more on the humidity then so much temp difference. In winter months the humidity in my house is down to around 18-22 percent so i can run the chiller for hours at -5C and not get condensation at all but in the summer months where the humidity in my house is from 35-45 percent -5C creates condensation in about an hour.
