Hey guys its been a long time since I have had to ask for help but here goes:
I have a windows 10 desktop with two large GPUs but no room for more. So I decided to bust out an old XP based desktop and noticed that it had a single PCIe card slot. My plan was to install Linux and make it a remote folding machine. Two very frustrating days later I have an "open bench" set up with my EVGA 1050SC card plugged in and the client set up on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver. I am not using the CPU for obvious reasons and only trying to put my GPU into use. The WUs download and then core 22 starts but immediately throws up an UNKNOWN_ENUM (127 = 0x7f) error.

Any ideas on how to get this setup functional would be amazing. I have been folding for about 11 years now but I have never used linux until this past week. And I have to admit I do not like it so far.

I think you do not have the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. They should bring the OpenCL compute packages as well in ubuntu.

Linux is slightly confusing at first as well.
I personally use Xubuntu derivative on 18.04 as well. I also installed the python OpenCL bindings package as well. Not sure if it was needed or not.

Is Version: 7.4.4 still active? May want to upgrade to 7.5.1

That might be it. It definitely isn't catching any OpenCL or assigning numbers for them. What's the bit about 2 gpus? Is that an integrated gpu?

I had the NVIDIA 390 proprietary driver installed and also tried the 430 one. They both caused this issue. I also installed the python-gnome2 package after googling and seeing from the terminal installation of the client showing that it was a dependency. I installed the CUDA from the NVIDIA site since that was also suggested by other forum posts from the past. The installed client was from installing the v7.5.1 download file so I'm not sure why that is showing it as being 7.4.4. There are two GPUs listed because yes this motherboard is very old and contains an onboard graphics chip.

    So a search of UNKNOWN_ENUM (127 = 0x7f) lead me here, https://foldingforum.org/...c.php?f=80&t=30785
Q: did you install the drivers by adding ppa's? or from nvidia website? I have only had luck using the ppa way

Spend some time rooting through this thread and any links that are included - I suspect you'll either find the direct answers or be led to where you can get them with some minor time on Google.

For best results, I'd suggest the following.
Uninstall all fah packages via apt.
Then reboot and install fah from the foldingathome.org site again.
Check to make sure the nvidia-xxx-compute packages are installed.

Agreed. I follow the Tutorial from chris21010 on every install of mint & F@H on a Linux box. Step by Step using copy/paste into the terminal and it has been flawless. Like I mention in the thread you linked, be sure to turn firewall on as it is of out of the box.

Edit, ipkha chimed in and made a valid point. To uninstall use the purge command  from the terminal or you may have the same issues. All folders need to be deleted and Linux puts them in places you need to dig around to find, once you do, "Delete" doesn't work easily.  I had the purge command saved somewhere and will try to find it, if anyone else can find it quicker please post it because I cant remember which one of these boxes its on lol

Thanks for the help guys. I have to admit that I caved and tried to install Windows 7 and was able to get away with that for now. I will try the Linux thing again in the near future but was trying to get my card up and going as fast as possible to help as much as I could. I am happily folding proteins as we speak but here are the answers and followup questions that I have to all your replies.

I have to be honest I don't know what ppa is. I used the NVIDIA site to install the newest driver initially and then in the Software Updates section of Ubuntu itself under additional drivers I switched it to the proprietary driver 390, rebooting before trying to fold after each driver install.

I assume it would have to deal with the openCL packages since I didn't think about those when I started installing things. I've been a windows man all my life so I'm used to an easy file download including most everything I need at once.

Again I assume that is another "dependency" of sorts that wasn't included in the NVIDIA driver? How does one remove all instances using the apt flag?

Will the Mint and Ubuntu be similar enough in their Distros to be able to follow this tutorial you speak of? If so I will give it a try the next time I attempt this crazy mess of setup.

Mint is my preferred route - It takes Ubuntu and, to me, makes it feel a little bit more professional while feeling user friendly.  Ubuntu suffers from what I call 'Being too happy/bubbly'. I want my OS to function, not be 'happy'.  But, that's all a matter of opinion, obviously.

You SHOULD be able to follow the MINT instructions step by step as it's binary identical to Ubuntu and uses the same management software throughout, just a different look and layout.  Once you get all the bugs worked out, it's a sweet setup that gives you a pretty substantive boost to your numbers.

Yes, ima leave the link right here for the future. For ease I choose mint . I also prefer the Mint desktop over other flavors of Linux because to me it is the most "Windows Like". My wife has been on mint over a year and has not known.  She mainly surfs the web.

Ubuntu packages the nvidia drivers a d distributes them. The best course of action I do every install of Xubuntu is to type: sudo apt install synaptic. Synaptic is a graphical package manager for apt. Run it and do a search for nvidia. Install the latest nvidia package from there and it should pull in the other ones that you need.
There is a other drivers utility in Ubuntu you can use to select which proprietary drivers you want.
