Afternoon,

I've been experiencing crashes - more accurately, the PC restarts during some portion of some games. Curiously there is no crash log, and so running whois did not yield any result. At this moment, I'm suspecting the PSU/GPU... but how was I able to do folding and crypto mining if the PSU was bad (wouldn't that max out my power draw?)

Games:
  • GTA V - crashes randomly
  • Battle Tech - crashes as trying to load single player
  • Deep Rock Galactic - crashes at the end of a mission sometimes
  • Crashes as I launch Furmark benchmarking
Pending Attempts:
  • Find a new GPU/PSU to swap and test
  • Find a wattmeter to see power draw
Attempts:
  • Cleaned the inside of the desktop, unplug replug and spray with electronic cleaner and duster
  • Moved the power cable from 1/2 to 3/4 on the PSU
  • Removed nearby usb hub from nearest PCIE for more air flow
  • Did the DDU, reinstalled fresh drivers
  • Updated mobo bios firmware
  • Changed fan preset to more aggressive
  • Windows and GPU drivers up to date
  • ChkDsk all hard drives
  • No OC, tried to play with it a long time ago but never was aggressive on it
  • Ran memory check on it. No error.
  • Debug mode: 1 crash of 4 games of deep rock galactic after mission ends. Still crash at campaign loading screen on battletech. So it didnt do anything.
  • Event viewer always puts it as ID 41 (The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.)
  • Benchmarked using Superposition. Went well for 1080 medium, but crashed when trying the 4k.

 System build:
  • CPU: Intel i5-6600k 3.5 GHz
  • GPU : EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB SC+ GAMING ACX 2.0+, 06G-P4-4995-KR
  • Mobo : Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (4)
  • PSU: EVGA 780 W 80+

Imgur album for GPU-Z : /a/7iaml3o

Any suggestion on what to try next? Is it right to suspect the GPU is bad? I purchased it back in 1/16 so definitely out of warranty, should've purchased the extended grr.

    Thanks for the release!

I did suspect the PSU, but I'm not sure how to test it outside of V-out since I can't duplicate the demand a GPU would request.
I was wondering what my next step should be, maybe buy another PSU while sending this one back RMA (thankfully the PSU 210-GQ-0750-V1 have 5 year warranty)? At least it's much cheaper than replacing the gpu ha!

To be Clear - crashing during the game loading is NOT automatically the PSU .... could be drivers

Are the Games On your PC hard drive or are you playing Online .. ?

If playing online which host & Browser are you using ...?

Run a benchmark to load your system ... benchmarks are consistent & repeatable

Time Spy / Superposition/ Fire Strike

Run GPU-Z & look at the Sensor tab - you can set it to record, so if PC crashes you can still go back & see

If you have a UPS ( uninterruptible power supply) with a readout or the wall type of readout that goes between your wall outlet & the PSU cord (Kill-A-Watt Electricity Monitor) ... you could see the Watts being demanded

Run Your GPU in debug mode ... this will limit the power ... does it crash ?

Have your Nvidia drivers changed ?  Have you tried older Drivers ?

See this Thread: Basic troubleshooting steps. Windows clean boot, clean driver install, debug mode, etc

album for the gpu-z results, sorry about that...  /a/7iaml3o

The games are spread around 3 hard drives.
    1 M.2 SSD
    1 SSD
    1 Oldschool
They all passed chkdsk and nothing obviously wrong with them.

I'll work on some of those benchmark and finding a power logger for the wall. That should help see something!

And drivers. Yes i've tried quite a bit on this front. Will read again to see if there are something I miss.

OK do some testing & report back when you have the time

I'm curious if debug mode makes your games get past the startup & run longer

Check the Temps of the CPU & GPU ... while under load testing & note the room temp

OS is Win 10 ?    is it up to date ?  did the issue start after one of MS automatic updates ?

Run the Memory tester in Win 10 is a good start, but not the most robust RAM tester

Remove all OC from your Rig ... run it bone stock .. does the issue go away ?

Be aware that many cards of that era suffered bigly from solder cracking on the PCB which can cause a Pandora's Box full of issues, including what you describe.

If you want to, You can disassemble the card (very easy to do) and bake only the PCB like this, which should reflow any solder cracking that exists, then hope for the best.

If solder cracking is the problem and not a component failure, baking it will most likely fix it..It might fix it for only a short time, or a long time, or, not at all.

If you bake the PCB, do it only with the GPU chip side up..200C (Preheated oven) for 10 minutes should do nicely.

    Good luck.

!? Would the crack be observable under light and magnifying glasses?

Highly unlikely as they are often 'microfissures'.

ugh. Alright, I'm trying to arrange a time to borrow a friends' gpu, and I think the PSU is fairly affordable I can order a new one.

    Alright. Got an update.

Borrowed a power meter (the one that reads between the PSU and the wall)

    980 TI - Idle ~60-80W
    980 TI - Benchmark @1040 Extreme ~ average 300W
980 TI - Benchmark @ 4k ~ Crashes right as it tries, at around 170W

Then, did DDU and swapped the 980 Ti with a spare my friend sent me, a 550 Ti.

    550 TI - Idle ~ 60W
    550 TI - Benchmark @ 720 ~ Average 160W
    550 TI - Benchmark @ 4k ~ Average 160W (it ran!)

So with that, I think it's safe to say that my 980 Ti is toast?
Sadly I have a PSU in the mail right now. Oh well.

    Final update.

Bought replacement GQ series PSU with a GA one, and a 2070 super for the 980ti:
    - Remove and replaced 980ti with 2070 Super. System crash at 1080 extreme bench marking, which was a shock as the 550Ti ran it just fine. Conclusion is that the 550 Ti wasn't able to pull enough current load to triggers whatever fault with the PSU.
    - Remove and replaced the GQ series PSU with a GA series. Learned the hard way that you cant use the cables from the GQ series as somehow the pinout is different, leading to some time spent on rewiring.
    - Using a brand new PSU and GPU, everything was excellent.
    - Since we're all working from home, swapped 2070 S back to 980 Ti to stress test it. Found that the 980Ti is OKAY.
    - After some soul searching, the present me decide to just keep the 2070S even though the 980Ti was still good.

Thanks for the help and pointers. Enjoy the evga points :)

Hey! Would you mind telling me exactly what PSU you bought? I'm having exactly the same problem with my 980Ti using an 'EVGA G1 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply'.

    Thank you!

Oh sheesh way to revive an old dead thread haha. But hey, this is what I get for the replacement PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GA, 80 Plus Gold 750W, (220-GA-0750-X1)

Do remember that the pin-out within the cables are different (somewhy? as explained to my by evga tech on the phone) --- so you need to remove all the old psu cables and put new ones on.

Thanks 😅 I figured out for sure that my PSU was failing only about 10 mins ago when I tried turning the PC on and it kept flickering on/off. GPU in or out didn’t make a difference. Thanks to your thread I figured it out - Nvidia thought it was my GPU and thought I should buy a new one. 😂 thank you!

Good job, glad I helped! I ended up with a 2070 Super ha. If I knew it was a definite PSU issue, i'd have waited and jumped on the 30 series bandwagon too. Alas!

For anyone visiting this thread because they have the same issue I do have an answer.
Restarts under load and or certain heavy usage conditions means the card is most likely on the way out or your PSU is bad. You can check if that is the case by running the power test on OCCT.

I have had this exact issue with 2 different EVGA 980tis. They first start cutting power to the whole PC and sometimes will just stop outputting a signal until the computer is restarted.
After a while the card will die and the PC will fail to turn on while the GPU is plugged in.
The issue is something to do with 3D rendering as regular benchmarks like Furmak and stress tests with no 3D rendering work just fine.
Be careful running 3D benchmark tests as that is what killed both of my GPUs in the end. Specifically OCCT.
