This is a repost from Tom's

TLDR: Monitor way too big, too bright, hot glowing colours, hurts my neck and eyes. Feels too zoomed in.

I have returned mine and I have never been SO conflicted with a piece of hardware before in my life. Usually I love or hate something, but here I was torn.

Have you ever gone to the movies and only the front row seat is open and you end up watching the movie but your neck is craned up, and you feel too "zoomed in" on the action? That's how I felt with the PG279Q, as no matter how far I pushed it back it felt too big and even though I lowered it as much as it would go on the stand my neck was back and I was looking upward to the center of the screen, causing neck aches and eye strain.

Colours way too hot. UI elements especially "Glowed" REALLY bright constantly making me blink.

I tried to follow every Calibration suggestion I could find and it was always too washed out, too bright or too dark.

All four corners had incredible amounts of either light bleed or IPS glow that was really distracting.

I did love the feel of gaming with G-Sync with FPS hitting around 100 to 120 in modern games at 1440p, and textures, blacks, lighting effects seemed so gorgeous, so this is why I was torn. But the pros were too minimal.

I just don't get the desire for 27 inch monitors for desktop gaming. If I wanted a TV I'd buy a small OLED Television.

Anyways just curious if you had a similar experience to me? Or maybe I'm just getting too picky in my old age.

Edit:  I ordered this for my next attempt.

Keep in mind that I am still going from 21.5 to 24 inches so there is a small screen size upgrade.  It hits every need for me except for IPS.  But if the Asus represents how glowy and bright IPS looks like today I don't want it lol

Hmm, I went from a 24" Dell 1080p to the PG279Q about 2 years ago and love it.  Still have the Dell as a 2nd monitor though.  I think the Asus looks perfect, but then I also calibrate my monitors with a Colormunki and DisplayCal software.  As far as the bleed goes, you may have gotten one of the bad panels.  I did see a lot of complaints about light bleed issues, but luckily haven't had that issue with mine.  Keep in mind though this monitor model is like 4 years old now.  If I was going to buy another monitor to go with or replace my Asus it would probably be the new LG 27GN950 when it finally becomes available https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27gn950-b-gaming-monitor

edit:  It looks like late 2020 availability on that though so I'd probably end up with this instead if I couldn't wait https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-ultragear-27-ips-led-qhd-freesync-monitor-with-hdr-black/6358119.p?skuId=6358119

I was tempted to buy one of those physical colour calibration devices but then I figured it's not gonna get rid of the bleed so that kind of pushed me over the edge.   Appreciate your feedbacks.

Sorry to hear but it's whatever you are comfortable with.  The one you chose is the younger sibling to the 27" I have.  Both same screens but just different in size.  You'll have slightly more DPI than me though.

Oh yeah it is the 24 inch of what you have.   Do you like your monitor?

That LG will probably cost a liver and a kidney. 4k, 1ms, IPS, HDR and 144to160hz?  Dream come true if your wallet doesn't try to flee

This has got me wondering,  will all monitors from now on be all 27" as the smallest? I think I'll feel lost if they don't make 24/25 inches anymore.

By the way, I know the cry also seems to be "24 inch is too small for 2k/4k"     Windows 10 scaling works perfectly fine.  I rescaled my desktop/browser on that 27 inch I was testing to exactly how I had it on the 24 inch.

Modern AAA games are really intelligent at scaling their text and UI so am wondering why people feel 2k on a 24 inch is too small?

Yeah it's ok but does have some weird issues of some odd lines and spots that can be visible through anything at times.  I might RMA the screen since I'm still under warranty, even though I purchased this 'new' from a seller on ebay since the warranties on these screens are tranferable which is great and not based on the buyer but that is a whole other process to get it transfered as I had issues and they (Dell) assisted me in doing such.

If the price is right on that 4K LG, I'll probably jump onboard but than I'll have to sell this 2080 Ti + WB and recoup some funds back for the next gen to be able to run high FPS on that kind of screen.  Might sell the screen too or keep it and move it above the new screen and have 4 screens total but we'll see as I'm having trouble finding a arm that can stack above a 27" while holding another 27" screen.

Good news is I have a Colormunki to calibrate the screens as I have now since I surely won't be used to the brightness of the IPS panel.

I think 24" will always be around for the time being.  27" is the happy medium for gamers.  Anything beyond that is even more niche but I do love those super wide screens.  I think the biggest out there is a 49" by Samsung but would love to see a single screen the size of x3 27" but don't think something like that exists as of yet.  All I've seen are x2 24" or 27" screen sized single panels.

I also do the same for the 27".  I run scalling at 125% so it looks similar to the 24" 1080p center screen I had before as I still use the side panels that are also 24" 1080p vertically.

Heh again coming back to what I'm saying about gamers wanting living room televisions on their PC desks :)

Could those issues you described with the Dell be colour banding?

Not necessarily a big screen TV.  It's this

x2 27" 1440p screens in one.  There's a slightly cheaper version of this screen that is only 1080p.

As for the issues with my 27" Dell screen, it's this.  If you can't see it, right click and open image in new tab so you're able to zoom there.

This was done on a grey background as that color was the one that made the issues pop more than anything else.  It's really annoying.

Oh yeah I can see it clearly.  I have a tiny spot on this old 21.5 Asus but that is massive. Ugh.

And that does look sweet now that I see the curved.    I was looking at the 32 inch LG curved they have at Best buy and it was insanely gorgous but of course the thing in my mind is "Anything can prop up a good 2D image but how does it game in moving 3D?"

Well, hmmm, now I need to go back and look at the CES vids again cause I swear LG had a new 2K 27" coming to replace that other one I linked from Best Buy.  I actually don't want 4K as I'm running a 2080 Super not a Ti.

By the way this is what Asus PG279Q screen looked like in terms of the bleed.  Not sure if it was backlight bleed or IPS glow but here's a photo.  Of course the photo exaggerates how bad it is but shows where it was happening.

That's pretty bad, fortunately mine was pretty good, at the time 3 yrs ago people were having to go through 3 to 4 of them to get a good one. It's a shame all this time later and Asus still has them that bad.

Yeah that's definitely backlight bleed and that's really bad.  I wonder if Asus is trying to offload all the returned ones as new or something.  However, I wonder if part of it is people having the brightness and stuff cranked way too far because new monitors and TV's always come in nuclear display mode out of the box.  Mine has maybe a couple slight spots of bleed at the top and bottom edges but just a slim line.  It's also calibrated to a 140 or 150cd/m (forgot which I used) brightness level though.

Yeah wow horrible.  Wouldn't be surprised if they recycle these bad bleeding returned monitors as new back into supply to just get rid of them.

It boggles my mind the cost for these screens and the issues that come with them.

Yeah I'm sure there is some type of customer who just likes the size of the screen and colours and doesn't game so they probably don't care about the bleed.  Us picky gamers of course won't stand for it
