As a "human computer," Johnson famously double-checked the numbers for astronaut John Glenn's 1962 orbital mission. Glenn himself asked for Johnson to re-run the computer calculations prior to his launch. This came at a pivotal moment in the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. "When asked to name her greatest contribution to space exploration, Katherine Johnson talks about the calculations that helped synch Project Apollo's Lunar Lander with the moon-orbiting Command and Service Module," NASA says in a biography of Johnson. NASA quoted Johnson in a statement when she accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom: "I counted everything. I counted the steps to the road, the steps up to church, the number of dishes and silverware I washed … anything that could be counted, I did." Johnson's life counted, immeasurably. RIP Katherine Johnson. A historic and important person. NASA renamed a building in her honor. I read she was the last of the three {hidden figures women}to pass.

RIP it's was a long life for her filled with many highs like the first man to walk on the moon to lows like the two space shuttle disasters but at least she got to see the international space station and the amazing rover work on mars as well as the amazing images from the hubble telescope. Hopefully she passed feeling that we doing the right things with space exploration.

I was always in awe of the amount of "brain power" these women possessed. R.I.P. Without these ladies...where would we have been in the space race?
