So today I got a black screen While playing wow. did the normal checked drivers, updates ect. so after a few hours of going through the motions I decided id strip down pc give a good clean just incase it was over heating even tho it appeared to be fine via benchmarks, seemed to keep being wow related.
So cleaned pc noticed the GPU felt a little  oily/sticky in places. re assembled pc reasonable happy with the clean.
Back in wow 20 mins in pc just shut down completely, when I tried to power on the rgb would flicker and nothing.
So started trying to trouble shoot this. I disconnected the gpu first completely from psu and mobo. hit the power button and it fired up. hmm.
Swapped the gpu with one in another pc at home a 960 I think. anyways it fired up and wow was working fine. my main gpu, in the other computer however same problem, a flicker of life then wouldn't even try to boot. removed gpu and that pc also without the 1080 in it also fired up.
So decided to have a closer look at what ever this oil was. I removed the back plate and found a fairly large oily patch.
Is this something that can be fixed?

Thermal Pads do leave the oil ... not an issue the oil is non-conductive ... was there a Thermal pad in that area ?

sounds like the GPU needs to be RMA if still under warranty

If you have an AIO in your PC (cooling the CPU) & it leaked onto the back of the GPU ... thats a problem - probably not covered by warranty on the card

actually you can get more than just a few buck selling it for "parts only" ... if it is out of warranty

surprising how much some people will pay for non-working cards

Customer Service can run that serial number & tell you if it is in warranty

it is a long shot but ... did you try the second BIOS position on your card ?

Seems to be a power issue from your description so far ... & not you PC / PSU as you already tested in a second computer

You have this card ?  EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW GAMING, 08G-P4-6286-KR   - it has EVGA Double BIOS

Small switch to the right of the Second 8-pin power socket

Yeah I was thinking would end up on ebay as a non working card and try to recover something atleast.
Yes that's the card. I have not tried the other bios will give that a go now. the thought didn't even cross my mind to be hoenst as there seemd to be no life in it atall.

Tried both the master and slave on side nothing.
when I first turn power on at psu I get some lights on mobo.
soon as I hit the power button on case. I get a flash of light on the rgb AIO cpu
and on the rgb psu. then nothing only way for it to repeat that is to power off at psu and then try again same results every time.
had same results on other pc also. when you try to turn on via case just a led flash on mobo then nothing bad times.

I'd avoid power on any more ... card seems to have an electric issue .. if its a short & your PSU safety overload fails to shutdown it could cause the Smoke to come out - in a Bad way

Thank you for your help. appreciate the time you took to respond. I also thought was electrical short. since the way it would flash then nothing. and some sort of fail safe was kicking in to stop power up with the gpu in. will have to wait on Evga now but im pretty sure it will be a no its outside of the 3 years :(

As you said that you are from UK, I would advise you to read more about the law: https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/l/faulty-goods

Even if it is out of Scan or EVGA warranty, you still have rights up to 6 years as Scan is a UK seller.

I have done the same with Amazon and currently waiting to hear from their solicitors as their Customer Service is not informed / does not care about our Statutory Rights.
