There is a nack to doing a delid and relid properly, but that being said when reliding all you need to do is just put a little bit of silicone only on the 4 corners, not all the way around the lid. If there was so much it squeezed out and did that there was for sure an over abundance of silicone applied. Attached is a photo of a copper lid i just removed a few days ago from a 7980XE that i did over 2 years ago. There should be no squeeze out of extra silicone if done properly. And the liquid metal has to be just right as well. Sorry to here about the cpu being a dud now though, that always hurts.
That's exactly how I did it last night, hindsight is wonderful. Oh well, learn from experience.
