Hi, I got a 210-GQ-0650-V1 from my cousin who's off on duty now, he was using it in a system with just a NVME drive, a video card, no Molex or Sata devices. He upgraded his power supply and gave me his old one, a EVGA 650 GQ, for Christmas before be left. I'm trying to figure out if he gave me the wrong cables with it or if it's defective. When I connect a SATA device to the SATA cable plugged into any of the 3 SATA power ports on the PSU the PSU shuts down like it's shorted and one of the times I felt the SATA connector get warm for a moment and it smelled like hot plastic. I've verified that both drives I'm trying work fine in another computer. I tried on the Molex cable in the Perif port of the PSU with a known good old hard drive and it snapped loudly at the drive and the PSU shut off. Clearly, there's a short with the cables and the power supply. I'm trying to figure out if I just was given the wrong cables or if there's something wrong with the power supply. Since he's not reachable I can't ask him for at least 6 months and I can't figure out where he bought it from or when he bought it either so I can't rely on any kind of warranty for this.

The CPU 8 pin cable is a flat ribbon, that works fine, the 24 pin is mesh sleeved and so are the rest of the cables with it, I thought that was a little bit weird.

So how do I figure out if I have the wrong cables? Can I buy a set of cables direct from EVGA to make sure I have the right ones?

Welcome to the EVGA Forums

There is definitely an issue ... very well could be the wrong cables for that PSU were give to you by mistake

EVGA Does sell replacement cables

To know if they are the correct cables would require testing the cables ... pin by pin ... I'm not sure there is any specific markings on the cables ... especially older cables

Contact Customer Service

I do not see any cables listed under the compatibility tab on that PSU's page

Those do not look like the cable set I was given, thank you for finding that image. Any idea the cost of a correct set of cables? I'm going to grab my Fluke meter and check the PSU itself for shorts on the Sata and Perif ports between 12V and ground and 5V and ground once I figure out which pin is what voltage. I sure hope it's not a problem with the PSU itself.

PSU do NOT have a standard Pinouts ...  the Device Ends are Standardized ... thats why different PSU -- use different "custom cables"

and because there were no EVGA parts listed .. of idea on price for your PSU

Individually Sleeved cables that include the 24-pin (Your is perm attached - therefore don't need)~ $90  if not on Sale

again talk to EVGA CS - you never know - they might be able to help you for Much less

Seems like we might have yet another user victimized by incorrect PSU-to-cable pinouts.

As stated by Cool GTX, pinouts on component-ends have to be, and are, industry-standard as specified by Intel..But the pinouts on PSUs don't have to be, and in many instances aren't, creating a catastrophic conflict because the cables are proprietary.

What you can do now is either order the correct cable/s for the 650 GQ, or get the Fluke and check the component end voltages/grounds and remove and re-arrange them as neccessary..To remove the terminals, simply press on the terminal tabs with a suitable tool like this.

All of that should take about 15 minutes or so of your time..No biggie.

But I can almost guarantee you that the drives are toast now..You'll be really lucky if they aren't.

I drew up a pinout of the PSU power/ground at the PSU and then checked the Molex cable continuity down the wires, for sure I have the wrong cables with this PSU. At least 5V and Ground are swapped on the Molex and I took a closer look at the PSU and PSU end of the Molex cable, the square and rounded cavities don't match up.

I'm not too bummed if the drives are toast, I use a very old laptop drive with Linux on it for basic boot up and testing before I install Windows or whatever. If it's dead I'm out $10. The hard drive I connected to the Molex was a very old Parallel ATA drive that I don't care about, so no loss there.

I'll try getting in touch with EVGA and see if I can purchase a set of the correct cables at a reasonable price, I saw some for sale on eBay but now I don't think I trust that they'd be the correct cables since I can see how easily the wrong cables can plug in. Sorry if I'm a little bit slow at this, but this is the first time I've had a PSU with modular cables that were the wrong ones so it kind of caught me off guard.

So at the PSU end of things how would I unpin the terminals? It looks like the Molex cable is pretty easy to sort out since there's just 4 wires but I can't see inside well enough to un-pin, it looks similar to a CPU or VGA power connector but I'm not sure they're the same. Much easier to swap 4 wires at one end than to swap 4 wires and 4 different ends.

Correct --- the PSU plug End is the one you would change so the Device side has the correct Voltage & Ground with - that specific PSU

Edit : if you have the correct tools or you have to change All of the device ends on every cable you use

It's just a little easier to re-arrange the component end, and remember that you did that, or tag the cable with a reminder..If you want to re-arrange the PSU end, use the Fluke to measure the pinout voltage/ground and use an ohm meter to find out which terminal on the PSU end is the one on the component end..Any ground from any other cable will work as a ground for the tester.

Progress. Got ahold of EVGA and they can get me a set of cables for $40+shipping and will email me a link for purchase. Cool.

In the mean time I learned how to de-pin this type of connector, made a de-pin tool from the stainless spring steel part of a wiper blade on my belt sander and re-pinned the Perif cable end correctly. I did kill two hard drives but they're of no concern, just need to 'wipe' them at work with a steel spike through the platter/board/arm motor.

I took a closer look at the Sata cable ends and I think I toasted a few so I'm going to re-pin some Sata power cables from another modular PSU using the cable end that plugs into this PSU. One set of Molex cables and one set of Sata cables should be enough and save me from spending $40. On the other hand I think I'll also spend the $40 just to have the correct cable set so later on should I need to add on cables to the system I know I have the correct ones. All in all a good learning experience and I know that the PSU protection circuits work, that's been well tested!

Thank you all for your help here, especially in regards to how quickly I was answered and the quality of answers. Hopefully I can be just as helpful as you all have been to me.

Glad to help, and welcome to the EVGA Forums..If you haven't yet, be sure to browse through the Ultimate Self-Starter Thread For New Members that has a lot of good info for you.

There's also CableMod that has a wide assortment of cables (individual or sets) in various colors, lengths and connector configurations available for many PSUs, including an EVGA 650 GQ..Use the CableMod Configurator in the red banner near the top of the page..EVGA will sell you individual cables too if you Contact Customer Service.

Re-pinning your own is simple enough though.

A less than stellar experience with EVGA Customer Service so far. Initially (1/18) I was told $39.99 for cables + shipping and to wait for an email with a purchase link. Today I received an email stating that the total would be $59.63, I questioned why there was nearly $20 shipping and was informed that the cable set is $49.99+$9.64 shipping. Somehow between the 18th and today the cable set went up in price by $10. I'm not to keen on being quoted one price then invoiced another higher price. For $60 I'll just make my own cables from my spares here.

So zero communication from them when I asked about the price difference. Is this a normal practice for EVGA customer service?
