This team managed to get low end products to run Ray Tracing better than the big name guys.... Seems like it could be bumped up to work on PC games

https://venturebeat.com/2020/01/07/adshirs-localray-software-enables-real-time-ray-tracing-on-2-watt-smartphones/

the company figured out how to make the software run on a wide range of devices, including smartphones and PCs, ranging from 2 watts to 200 watts of power consumption. Now they’re targeting developers and hardware makers to enable outstanding graphics to run in real-time on their devices.

LocalRay is a cross-platform solution that works on Arm, Intel, Microsoft, and Google operating systems, with Apple’s iOS coming soon. The company is showing demos at a suite at Caesar’s Palace during CES 2020, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas this week. The company is not disclosing its customers yet.

-------------------------------------------------------
**ADDED -   INTEL version
...And now we have Intel releasing info on a ray-trace alternative as well......

https://www.tomshardware....-20-ray-tracing-engine

Intel describes OSPRay as an open, scalable, and portable (OSP) ray tracing engine for CPU rendering, geared towards scientific visualization applications. It supports ambient occlusion, shadows, global illumination with physically-based materials and volume rendering, and it can be run on large, distributed-memory systems. OSPRay also supports the latest AVX-512 instruction set and is part of Intel’s oneAPI programming model.

-------------------------------------------------
and another new announcement for other Ray-Tracing -

And now another viable alternative for better Ray-Tracing -
 * who worked with Nvidia to get their raytracing into the RTX series.

HDRP Now Production Ready - The power of control that developers need to unleash beautiful high fidelity graphics on high-end consoles and PCs is now available for all. Also available today is the full-length version of The Heretic, which is created using HDRP and off-the-shelf Unity technology. This real-time feature includes CG humans and demonstrates what’s possible right now on Unity

Universal Render Pipeline Production Ready Since Unity 2019.1- Formerly known as the Lightweight Render Pipeline, the Universal Render Pipeline delivers beautiful graphics, scalability, and performance for the broadest array of platforms, including 2D, 3D, and AR/VR projects. New integrated Post Processing brings improved performance, and the increased light limit gives creators the power to exercise more creative freedom

Massive Evolution in 2D - A new suite of 2D tools, a dedicated 2D renderer, and features makes high-end creation more accessible by bringing new and improved production-ready workflows to teams of all sizes. A new sample project that showcases this evolution, Lost Crypt, is now available to download

Visual Effect Graph Now Production Ready - Create stunning, reusable, high-fidelity visual effects; now integrated with Shader Graph for faster creation of custom looks

Real-Time Ray Tracing Enters Preview - Built on top of HDRP, Unity’s real-time ray tracing realistically simulates how light behaves and interacts with physical materials, bringing global illumination and other effects to all types of projects, from photo-realistic to stylized

I wonder how it compares to Pre ray-tracing means of lighting and shadow effects? Wonder if trimming it down to much would defeat the purpose. Granted the pictures shown all have uh... shiny things in them.

Also, the founder need to change his name to "Ray Tracings" so he can hang out with Doug Bowser in the "people-who-have-names-related-to-their-company-lounge".

It's important to remember that Ray Tracing itself is not "Locked" into hardware. The 10XX series can do it by software but doesn't do it fast enough for most games. Also why RTX is NVIDIA the support for ray tracing does exist in Direct X.

I am happy to hear that something like this can be done I just wonder about the price they will charge and how it will work when you really have the hardware since I notice a lot of changes between the 40 minute render and the real time one. If hardware makes it look closer to the top image that is what I would want over a fast version that could be done on a phone but at the cost of everything having a glossy wet look.

Common like PhysX? Common like the thing which is uncommon? I would say that proprietary RTX will be "common" like PhysX was, while non-proprietary ray tracing will be common like physics.

I am happy to see varieties of RT due to the fact it gives more options to try unlike what was said in the RT cards launch by someone.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Not too many games support Nvidia's version of Ray Tracing in any impact full, meaningful way though...
Too much of a drag on the cores performance .

Which is exactly why we need better, more efficient ways to reduce the overhead impact if you are truly going to integrate it in everything - the way people would actually care about & get support behind.
A cheaper, faster way for programmers to implement it all around is needed.

I really believe we'll see this go the way of  "PhysX" did from back in the day  - hardware locked at first ,  then went to easier implemented mainstream versions...

"Few" key word in your sentence. The most awaited title DOOM wont support your precious Nvidia RT this.round on 2020 i wonder why that is? 🙄.
