Kevin, did I read correctly in another thread you game at 4K/60hz?

Yes, but I don't play any first person shooters seriously.  Mostly survival/adventure games and casual sports games.  Though I do play a bunch of STEEP that I can see being a bit better at high FPS.

I also recently got into working on low lag and low lag vsync settings, the decrease in input lag is somewhat noticeable for me vs. straight vsync.

I could have sworn it was you that said 144hz and 1440p was the way to go, unless I'm confusing you with Jack

I don't recall giving you any advice to get a specific resolution or refresh rate, but 1440p144 is the most popular choice for high end gaming.

It was probably me that said that since that is the happy medium currently as 1080p was before.  I still think there are more 1080p users than 1440p and 4K combined.

I was VERY tempted to get that Alienware 25" that was G-Sync and 240hz but only 1080p.  I figured it would DSR scale perfectly to 4k for recent and older titles.   And couldn't decide hehe

DSR is only minor advantage at best.  You're better off with true MSAA.

I think you'll find that MSAA 8x with No FXAA will do better than upscaling.

Challenge accepted :)

Okay here is Tomb Raider/1080p before I apply 4xMSAA (Highest option available)

And here it is after applying 4xMSAA, same settings:

If I can encourage you to find a way to have them both in full screen and flick back and forward, surely you notice that, yes the jaggies are gone, but, all the textures get blurry and washed out, it's almost like their depth disappears as well.  To me it is night and day.  Do you see it?

LOL. Yeah of course I see it, not subtle.  The MSAA is doing what it's supposed to.  If you want a sharper look, you can reduce MSAA or fiddle with all the other settings to see what looks good to you.  Try to avoid FXAA except in limited cases, it just adds an overall blur.

Post a cap with DSR 4x and no MSAA, with all the other settings how you would run it.  Also take the time to review a few Tomb Raider settings guides to see what benefits the setting have vs. their gpu load.

Keep in mind I'm saying straight 1080 may "do better" in the context of overall performance, including frame rate.  As in 4x DSR 1080p with medium settings vs. straight 1080p with high settings, the straight 1080p should run significantly faster and might end up looking about the same.

Just out of curiosity, you could also try DSR 1.2x with low MSAA, that is a 6 to 5 downsample in the vertical and horizontal, it should have an anti-aliasing effect.  I've run ARK in 4K with a .9x in game resolution scaling and low AA when I want to lock FPS above 60hz.

Thanks mate, although I now have my Dell S2417DG and I'm way more impressed with it than than the Asus swift.    The screen took me from 21.5inchs to 24.0inches and native 1440p.  So still an upgrade in both areas

You guys were right, native 1440p blows the DSR version out of the water in terms of clarity and keeping the screen somewhat smaller than 27" at this new native rez makes the jaggies not noticeable.  I have to look for them.

You know what is another strange side effect?  Compared to DSR 1440p, my native 1440p has cut off about 7 degrees in temps across the clock.

I am still getting occasional tear even when G-sync is working but I figure I need to cap my max FPS to 2-3 below the max screen refresh.

I love this monitor in most areas, except for watching movies.  For some reason it has the most hideous banding issues on blacks when watching a film on it.

When you use AA do you use the Nvidia control panel to sharpen it?  Do you have a before and after screenshot up? No need to go make one but if you have one up I'd be curious to see it.

I'm saying that you should use MSAA and that  2x or 4x might appear more "sharp" (defined edges) than 8x.  I'm not aware of any sharpness control in NCP.

You should be using the in game MSAA.  Set NCP to "Antialiasing-mode: Application Controlled".  Do not add AA with NCP.

Turn off FXAA in NCP and in game.  Turn off any FSAA offered in a game.  I bet your blurry textures are a result of strong FXAA.

Oversampling/downscaling resolution via DSR can be technically referred to as FSAA, or Full Scene Anti-Aliasing.  4x DSR is actually 2x FSAA.  Very resource intensive.  Multi Sample AA (MSAA) was invented as a less resource intensive but effective solution.
