New Updates for X299 Motherboards today:

BIOS 1.20 (E299 Dark) / 1.21 (E297 FTW K) / 1.13 (E296 Micro ATX 2) /1.22 (E295 Micro) Updates

  • Updates CPU Microcode to 0x12C per Intel's request for Voltage Overclocking issue.
  • Default enable Turbo Boost 3.0 Device.*
*Note - Users may need to install the Turbo Boost 3.0 driver if it has not been previously installed.  Per Intel, however, the Windows OS has native driver support for Intel® Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 and the feature is enabled automatically.

Windows Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your motherboard:
         151-SX-E299-KR - EVGA X299 Dark - v1.20
         142-SX-E297-KR - EVGA X299 FTW K - v1.21
         121-SX-E296-KR - EVGA X299 Micro ATX 2 - v1.13
         131-SX-E295-KR - EVGA X299 Micro ATX - v1.22
  • First go into your BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
  • Close all open programs.
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and double-click update.bat
  • Press Y to start the flash process
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, the system will automatically shut down. Then power on again and go into BIOS to setup.
  • NOTE: If flash box immediately closes after flash attempt, the flash may need to be ran from a CMD prompt with administrator privileges or DOS version.

BIOS Installation
  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

Please let me know if anyone runs into problems with this update.  Thanks!

Sadly it appears that Intel has still not corrected the issues with AVX-512 discovered back in this post, https://forums.evga.com/X299-Dark-BIOS-v118-Possible-BugIssue-m2975001.aspx.  Have they given any new updates? Intel is starting to behave like AMD when it comes to bug fixes...

EVGA X299 Micro ATX 2 here with 16core i9-9960x and just updated to this latest bios. Everything looks fine! When I turned on manual - per core multiplayer then when BIOS save changes selected it reported also some voltages changed to some predefined values. Older bios didn't show that but I hope everything is like before because I found them stable settings before and hope they are now also. AUTO selection didn't make TB 3.0 despite it being now default enabled, to choose favored core and also boosted single core under load max 4.25ghz when with auto. Multiplayers 45 for 2 favored cores and 44 for others it works like before and single threrad will keep in 4.5Ghz favored when under load.

Hi. Before I apply this firmware, I have two questions.

First, I wanted to ask if this CPU microcode update does what this article (link below) says might happen. If so, I will have no part in that kind of nonsense and I will take my chances with Plundervolt exploits without giving it so much as a second thought. Overclocking always trumps security for me. Has EVGA done any in-house before and after overclocking tests that the results can be shared?

If it does cause any overclocking impairment, this should be prominently disclosed with larger font bold text so that anyone considering applying it does so eyes wide open, and with a full understanding of the degree of anguish and regret that flashing it may cause them if they enjoy competitive overclocking.

Protecting your Intel CPU from Plundervolt attacks can ruin your overclock, maybe | PCWorld

Second question relates to Turbo Boost 3.0 being enabled by default. I do not want this and ALWAYS disable it. I loathe the behavior associated with it. Is there a switch to disable this?

(Either of the above conditions being present would totally eliminate my interest in applying this or future firmware updates. If I wanted a CPU that sucked at overclocking, I would save money and buy AMD rubbish.)

Thanks in advance for clarifying. Have a nice Christmas and New Year.

The new x299 CPUs have an extra x4 PCIe lanes, but the EVGA Dark does not support them.

Well, I guess nobody from EVGA knows how to answer my question from 6 days ago. Or, maybe they don't want to because it will create too much of a ruckus if they did.

X299 does not support SGX (thank God), so Plundervolt cannot work. But, the release notes mention that vulnerability so I am scratching my head wondering why the BIOS update includes microcode designed to patch that. My x299 Dark is working extremely well with the 7960X. I think I will just skip it and stick with older BIOS that works so well that there is nothing to be desired. No point in bothering with 1.20. There's too much to lose and nothing at all to be gained by rolling the dice on the latest BIOS update.

Thank you for responding. What forum and what have they mentioned specifically regarding v1.20 of the EVGA X299 Dark BIOS update? I am interested in finding out, but I have not seen anything specifically application to X299 in general, or to the X299 Dark v1.20 BIOS update yet. Searching "X299 Dark v1.20 BIOS update" on Google yields no results.

I question the logic of this because X299 does not have SGX Technology and SGX is what Plundervolt exploits. So, there would be no reason to change microcode for this on an X299 motherboard or CPU. Nonetheless, even on the non-HEDT systems that have the Plundervolt vulnerability, why not just do a BIOS update to remove SGX and leave everything unlocked? Most systems other than laptops have a BIOS option to disable SGX already. The OEMs need to unlock that setting on laptops too... problem solved. Just disable SGX and move on. Everything about this smells like some kind of scam to me. A big to do about nothing.

New Updates for X299 Motherboards today:

    BIOS 1.20 (E299 Dark) / 1.21 (E297 FTW K) / 1.13 (E296 Micro ATX 2) /1.22 (E295 Micro) Updates

Please let me know if anyone runs into problems with this update.  Thanks!

So, since nobody is talking about it, I went ahead and rolled the dice to flash v1.20 on my X299 Dark. So far, I am having no problems with CPU and RAM overclocking. My daily driver settings on the 7960X (50x16 @ 1.420V and RAM at 4200 CL16-18-18-32 1T @ 1.550V) seems stable. I will continue testing that, along with my 52x16 and 53x16 benching clocks, to see if the new Intel microcode has degraded performance further. I wish the default setting for Turboboost 3.0 would have been left on disabled. Having that enabled by default sucks.

HOWEVER, on the screen with CPU core and voltage overclock settings, when you get down to the menu items for setting voltage on core, mesh, VCCIO, SA and other things, the legend information on the right side of the screen has random Chinese characters along with English. Somebody needs to clean up that mess. Seems kind of sloppy and not up to EVGA quality standards.

Hello, would there be a chance to add speed spectrum options to the bios, then bclk would be stiff 100?

Heyo Mr. Fox! Just a heads up that this is primarily a user to user forum, and any tech questions for EVGA can be put directly to EVGA's tech support folks (who are usually quite helpful, and can check around for the nerdier questions that they dont have an answer to):

What happened to quiet boot? I updated the bios and lost that option. I don't like the full logo at boot and like the simple windows 10 logo instead.
I might have to downgrade back to the previous bios if I can't get quiet boot.

    Hey.

can anyone explain to me why the first core must always be the highest so that I can set the other one as I want?
