Has anyone successfully used an 8gb or higher stick with the Classified SR-2?

I was looking back at the original manual for this board, and if I understand correctly the maximum memory per stick mentioned is 4gb.  I am not sure if that is because 4gb is the maximum supported per stick or because the manual was published back in 2010.  Maybe that was the maximum any manufacturers made back then but the board can support higher?

They did not have 8gb sticks back then. I used 8gb sticks on my EVGA x58 Classified3 and my FTW3 boards.
Gskill Sniper DDR3 1866 no issues at all. I ran 2 on them for total 16gb

It seems 4GB/slot and 48GB Max.
I have a English sr-2 mannual in my conputer but now I am not at home.

Is It usual? my supermicro X58 (x8dtl-6 nearly the cheapest level) can use 16gb/slot.

Yes that is definitely what my SR-2 manual says too.

However I am wondering if maybe that is just because 8gb sticks were not invented when that manual was published.

I would love to know if anyone has successfully used a stick larger than 4gb in the classified SR-2.

Upon further investigation, it seems like the answer is that yes, some 8gb ECC memory works with this board to bring the max capacity up to 96gb.  More details here: https://forums.evga.com/8...s-on-SR2-m1538509.aspx

I currently have an 8gb stick plugged into memory slots A1 B1 and I have slots A2 and B2 empty, and the computer is working, the manufacturer says my board can handle 16gb, but it never  specifies 4gb per slot. Is this an ok config or am I going to burn up my mobo? I have 2 more sticks of 8gb ram, all 4 sticks are identical, I figured before I plug it in and see if my computer turns on, I would ask advice here. I'd rather not permanently damage anything.

Hello, I can confirm that 96gb of Samsung ecc 8gb M393B1K70DH0-CH9Q9 M work on this board.

I will comment my case, I purchased the SR2 in 2011, and it was working flawlessly with 48gb of 1600MHz GSkill 4x12 modules, suddenly in 2017 the board stopped from recognizing all the memory, sometimes 40gb, others 44gb. And I was not able to overclock it anymore, even 1Mhz, it was running at 200MHz FSB all the time, with no overvoltage in any component.

I swapped the E5645 xeons with no luck, same result, I tried all memory combinations, swapping all modules in all possible combinations, same result. All memory modules were fine, It seemed that two black memory slots of CPU0 were broken.

I was forced to leave only 3 memory sticks on the CPU0 socket in the red slots, and I left the black slots empty, and the CPU1 with all the 6 memory sticks running, total 36 gb, the reason for this was the triple channel, if I left the memory in an asymmetric configuration (40gb most of the time,44gb sometimes), the performance was ridiculous, at the point that winrar benchmark fell from 18.800kb/seg to 2.800kb/seg.

So I decided to purchase 2 xeons x5690, the top for this board, the memory issue was not resolved, the problem persisted.

Later I decided to purchase 96gb of this Samsung memory (thank you Robbanswe for your post), to see if I have more luck, and yes, the 96gb are working fine, so no damaged memory slots, no xeons damaged, no memory sticks damaged, so.... A COMPLETE MYSTERY.

I will not overclock anymore this board, now I have a decent cpu clock speed with the x5690s and 96gb of ram, 1600 Cienbench R15 points, and it seems that the passage of time has done its job doing the motherboard more sensitive.

I decided to share my experience in case it is useful to someone else and to thank Robbanswe for his message putting the memories that work.

Re: Classified SR-2: maximum memory per stick? 2019/12/04 22:01:21 (permalink)
I've been having a similar problem to massdestructor
Very particular memory slots seem to fail or only work in combination with others. I originally had all populated with 2gb DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 memory.
The system will refuse to post if the memory configuration is not correct.
I've spent hours debugging to figure out if it's the ram or the slots. I had thought it was the slots, but maybe it's the ram.
Currently I am only able to post with 3 sticks of 2gb ram. I've tried every slot and every combination that works.
I am going to try Robbanswe suggestion of the 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1333 Samsung ram. I've ordered 2 to test with.
I'll post here if I have success.

The memory upgrade worked !!! I'm running 4 sticks of 8Gb ram and all the slots I've tested work fine !
I also ran a windows ram diagnostic which saw zero errors.
So happy ! SR-2 is still strong after 10 years !!! Whooot !!!!
I might even get some more ram.
Thank you to everyone for this post, it was super helpful ! I nearly gave up !

Re: Classified SR-2: maximum memory per stick? 2022/08/03 02:40:19 (permalink)
I have 2 SR-2's with both 24 GB RAM.

Inspired by Robbanswe and subvert I decided upgrade and ordered 96 GB M393B1K70DH0-CH9.
I found Memory.NET to be the best deal for $14 per 8 GB stick for a total of $168
Just plugged in the sticks and it was plug & play on standard settings!

Now ordering another 96 GB for my 2nd machine, so both are ready for the next 10 years!

Side notes when replacing after 10 years:
- board will not boot without cooling
- be ready to clean all your fans including the one on the mainboard
- replace the cooling paste
- replace the CR2032 cell

I you want to upgrade your processors, here is a nice deal for second hand X5690's at $43!
