Just gaming? Probably no reason to have more than 8 or 16 GB. It wasn't until about a month ago that I finally upgraded from 8 GB to 16 GB, and that was only because I was running out of RAM during time lapse video editing. I still wasn't running out of RAM while gaming.

So, 64 GB for gaming: worth it? Definitely not.

I ran 64 on a old build mostly because I was going to run a Ram drive but never got around to it.. so unless you got a smoking hot deal on the 64 gigs, stick with 32 or 16. Personally i am going for 32 just cause.

If you leave a million tabs open in browser like I do 32GB is nice otherwise 16GB is plenty.  64GB is a waste unless your workload actively uses it.

I always run 32 GB memory because I don't know what software I'm gonna try out.

You can see your Current/Min/Max/Avg System Memory usage with HWiNFO (Free) in the Sensor -> System part.

Leave it run minimized and running in the background while you go about gaming and doing whatever else you do on your PC..Then check it.

Unused memory is wasted memory and adding more when not needed will do nothing except cost you money..You probably don't even need anywhere near your current 32GB.

You can also check your Current/Min/Max/Avg GPU Memory in %..Or use EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner for Min/Max too..MSI Afterburner will track both System Memory (shown as RAM usage, MB) usage and GPU Memory (shown as Memory usage, MB) usage..Precision only tracks GPU Memory usage.

Going with 32GB is not that much of a waste for gaming. It's like $20-40 to go with (DDR4-3200) 2X16GB over 2x8GB. The extra RAM would come in handle for keeping apps running, without them causing performance issues.

It kind of depends. It's probably not worth it unless you have two open slots. I wouldn't replace sticks of memory to upgrade but I do think RAM prices are pretty reasonable right now. I just think going up that far in memory is mostly about more then gaming though since most games run pretty well on even 16GB of RAM.

16GB is the sweet spot for most PC.

32GB for those that need the extra RAM & can use it

64GB for anyone Not using professional software that can actually take advantage of it ... is a waste of money

Not only is it wasted memory and wasted money, but it also decreases system performance. Higher density memory operates at higher latency or lower frequency, and therefore performs slower than lower density memory.

If you use a lot of Virtual Machines that is one reason for more than 32GB. Extreme photoshop at 4K would be another. For gaming 32GB is more than enough.

I run a triple screen zoo here with apps running up the wazoo w/ 25+ tabs.  When gaming in BFV, I didn't realize I was chocking my PC RAM with only 16 GBs (2400).  Upgraded to 32GB (3200) and saw a jump in usage to almost 20 GB which tells me I was holding my machine back.  Feels more fluid now than before.  In the end, it all depends what your configuration is set as and what you're running.  Just for gaming, 16 GB should do you fine but 32 GB if you're looking to expand.  64 GB would be more for content creators, etc.

I recently did a build where I started with 32gb and then added a matching pair for 64gb when it went on sale.  Haven't really used it aside from trying a large Primocache disk cache.  Have seen 20gb used when playing ARK.  Mainly upgraded because of the possibility of doing some video editing, cad, etc and ram is cheap to buy.

Have vaguely considered changing to 32gb of b-die 3200CL14.   Currently have 3000CL16 clocked to 2666CL15 for stability.

If you're looking to spend more on memory, get 32gb 3200CL14 b-die, prices are cheap right now.

If you don't do video editing/encoding, run VMs, or any "data center" tasks on your PC there's no reason to go above 32. If you're strictly gaming on this then there's no real reason to go higher than 16, unless you find a good deal on the 32GB kit.

Oh yeah, also wanted to point out that I wouldn't build a higher end PC today without at least 32gb of ram.  Ram is super cheap right now, half the price as it was a year ago.  The only exception is a dedicated high FPS gaming or benchmarking system where you're aiming for maximum CPU performance and OC with 16gb of expensive high clock low latency memory.

Like I said above, I can see 20gb used running ARK, which came out in 2015.  What's to say another popular open world indie-ish game won't come out in the next few years that runs best when hogging memory in the 20-30gb+ range?  Most mainstream AAA games run fine on a system with 16gb ram and will for the foreseeable future.

Definitely concur with a lot of folks here -- between 16 to 32 GB of system memory is preferable for today's folding/gaming, etc., needs.

A lot of memory helps when you are first powering on your PC (faster boot-up times), backing up your system drive and files to an external drive, and running a lot of programs at once.

System memory, M.2 NVMe SSD's are all dirt cheap right now, so see what you can get on Black Friday and Cyber Monday a couple weeks from now.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

Those articles are outdated or failed to think about all the apps/browser tabs gamers keep open these days. With how cheap RAM is, it's not going to break the bank to spend $20-40 more to go with 32GB in a gaming PC. It's nice knowing i have enough RAM for any game that comes out for the life of my system.
