I have my telescope with a sun filter ready to go. What is the transit of Mercury across the Sun? From PG: The transit of Mercury – the innermost planet of our solar system – will be visible on November 11, 2019. A transit occurs when Mercury passes directly in front of the sun. At such times, Mercury can been seen through telescopes with solar filters as a small black dot crossing the sun’s face. Mercury’s diameter is only 1/194th of that of the sun, as seen from Earth. That’s why the eclipse masters recommend using a telescope with a magnification of 50 to 100 times for witnessing the event. Unless you are well-versed with the telescope and how to properly use solar filters, we advise you to seek out a public program via a nearby observatory or astronomy club. Mercury will come into view on the sun’s face around 12:36 UTC. It’ll make a leisurely journey across the sun’s face, reaching greatest transit (closest to sun’s center) at approximately 15:20 UTC and finally exiting around 18:04 UTC. The entire 5 1/2 hour path across the sun will be visible across the U.S. East – with magnification and proper solar filters – while those in the U.S. West can observe the transit already in progress after sunrise. The transit will be visible (at least in part) from most of the globe, with the exception of Indonesia, most of Asia, and Australia. Mercury takes some 5 1/2 hours to cross the sun’s disk, and this transit of Mercury is entirely visible (given clear skies) from eastern North America, South America, southern tip of Greenland, and far-western Africa. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Prime Sierpinski Problem LLR (PSP) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

In the announcement for this challenge, they talked about cloud servers and credits. Well, I setup 12 CPU cores on Digital Ocean, 20 on Azure, and 32 on Google Cloud. We'll see how they do. May get banned, but I don't think so. They are all legit computing tasks. All AVX 512 cores, that have anywhere from 50-80% the throughput of one of my 9800x cores. Will be entertaining.

One thing I learned about this project is the fact it hates non physical cores on my i9-9900k. I decided to go with MT and split it down the middle with 8 threads to each. This way I could suspend 8 threads and be able to game while still running the other 8 threads. The first two tasks I was running this way just bogged down and were not advancing much at all. As soon as I cut back to just one 8 thread task things took off. Put it this way when I was trying to run two 8 thread tasks one was at 15 hours plus and the other seemed stuck at 9 hours. Cut back to just one 8 thread task and they complete in 7.5 to 9 hours. So I went from 1.5 to 2 tasks completing in a day to 3 and smidgen in a day.

All MT Tasks. Seems like 4cpu is the sweet spot for efficiency. 8cpu run about 85% as efficient as two 4cpus. Trying a few 6's just to check them out. I also did a few 16's and they are less efficient than 8's (maybe 75% of a 4). The 3cpu vm's on Digital ocean are actually better than 4cpu google cloud machines. They are trivial to spin up on Google Cloud with the correct startup bash script. Shutdown maybe more nuanced without abandoning tasks.

My 9800x is setup with HT on. It's running two 4 core LLR tasks and 2 GPU tasks. The LLR tasks take about 10-12 hours, so I get maybe 4 per day. It's an avx-512 cpu, so that really helps.

Only 300+ individuals in this one, a low number for PG. I'm finally all in but it is like watching grass grow. All tasks are taking 24 hours or more.
