I've currently got 4 sticks of 8gb Camo Ballistix ram ddr4 2400 installed on my x99 Classified board. I came across 2 Red Ballistix camo sticks same specs... and 2 gray non camo Ballistix with same specs. All of the ram has the same specs/timings.
Questions:
Will these all work together?
In what order/slots should they be installed?

Currently, existing Ram is installed in the 1,3,5,7 slots. Do I put the Red sticks in 2 and 4 or 2 and 6? The gray sticks going in the remaining slots. Not sure which slots are paired up?

Wouldn't try and use them all together as they aren't meant to be run together.

I've tried adding additional ram. I filled all the slots, just added 1 extra stick. In no configuration can I get it to boot. It just keep cycling. I've reached DefCon 5. I've cried, I threw a tantrum on the ground. None of these tried and true methods has helped me achieve success.

A detailed and accurate description of how the memory slots work would be appreciated. I've wasted hours now on something the correct information would likely make a simple task. And the manual!!!!! A truly unuseful document. Is it the case that if I were only using 4 sticks of ram that I would place them in the 1,3,5,7 slots? Or would I just put them in the 1234 slots? Help me out here. I have to take the F#%king Noctua cooler off to get the inside sticks in and out. It's a massive pain in the ass.

Are there any setting in the BIOS that I need to screw with to add more RAM? A month ago, I bought a pair of matching ballistix sticks. I tried adding them and the machine wouldn't post. I went as far as to tell the place I bought that the RAM was bad... ( it was used). Now I'm thinking there was nothing wrong with it!!!!

Yes... I'm hostile and cranky at this point.

First, clear CMOS.

I (and many others) have run mismatched RAM with no issues, even from differing manufacturers..The most important thing to match is the VDIMM (voltage).

RAM will always run slower but may not run faster..And if RAM frequency, timing and voltage differs between modules, the BIOS will (should) detect that and RUN all the RAM at the slower frequency, timing and voltage detected in the RAM's SPD (Serial Presence Detect) chip IF all those settings are set to [Auto] in the BIOS.

I believe (but not sure on that board) that slots 1,3,5,7 and 2,4,6,8 comprise memory 'banks' (makes sense to me)..So I would put two more sticks of RAM in either slots 2 and 4 or 6 and 8.

You should most likely be able to add two more of the Red Ballistix without issue..I would give it go without hesitation since the frequency, timing and voltage match as you say they do.

Like I said the kits you have aren't meant to be run together. When you buy a quad channel kit they are meant to be run together. When you buy two more kits that are dual channel kits, and want to add them to your quad channel setup they aren't guaranteed to work in quad channel mode as they are meant for dual channel operation.

If you grab AIDA64 Extreme (30-day free trial, or pay) and go the the Motherboard -> Chipset information, it will tell you the current Active Mode of channel operation (Single, Dual, Quad) of the RAM.

I never had an issue using 2 dual channel kits in quad channel of the same exact memory.
But your kits are not the exact same kit. Maybe different manufactures.
Also you are trying to run 6 sticks, it may need to have all eight slots filled. I have 2 x99 classy's and only run 4 sticks.
Mayneed a little more mem voltage to run 6 sticks, or the memory controler may need a little more V.
EVGA's manual is not very good when it comes to memory slots being filled, Asus always is more clear on the memory populations.
I remember them being a pita with the memory. I added one stick at a time, reboot, shut down add another stick....
Also I had to have the memory timings and voltage set manually.
So try adding one at a time, and relax timings a bit, run it slower 2133 not 2400 The CPU mem controller maybe a little weak.
If the timings are 16.17.17.34 2T, set it to 17.18.18.38 2T

Re: Memory installation/compatibility... 2019/10/19 03:34:59 (permalink)
Bob and Bill got you on the right track. Just add one stick, to slot 1, reboot and go right to bios. Go to ram section and manually setup all the ram channels, if they separate when put in manual mode, make sure all channels are enabled to boot, if they give you that option, change them to same voltage, at 2400mhz and back the timings off by 2 and set the command rate to 2. Save, reboot and make sure it will boot. If it does, shutdown add a stick to slot 3, listed by the diagram, reboot and see if they will boot together. If so, you can add a stick to slots 5 and 7, by the diagram, that way all the primary channel slots are populated and a go. You MAY have to raise the voltage on the cpu a tick so the mem controller can accommodate the extra hardware. It may be fine and not need it till the last stick or two also. It depends on the cpu. Don't install sticks in the even slots till the others are filled and stable.
