I recently purchased a M.2 SSD and installed it. The option I purchased was the HP EX920 M.2 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD). Is this compatible with the X99 classified or is it incompatible due to it being PCIe 3.0? I have the M.2 slots enabled in the bios but it is not being detected.

It should work. Are you running the latest bios? According to the motherboard manual you need to select the operation mode in the bios setup screen because that m.2 slot shares lanes with pe5, and you need to select which mode you want to use.

I am running Windows 10 Pro. I will have to check the bios version when I get home. I have never messed with M.2 before, and already have Windows installed and configured on one of my SSD's. Are M.2 only available for use as boot drives and unable to work like a normal SSD installation for storage?

They can be used for just storage.

Thanks for the replies! If they can be used for just storage how do I go about formatting it? My system doesn't seem to be detecting it.

Your system isn't detecting it if it is not yet formatted. In Windows 10 open up Disk Manager and see if there is a drive volume present that is not recognized. If you see it then format it. If you are using an M.2 adapter in a PCI-E slot then make sure that slot is active in the BIOs.

The drive is not present in the disk manager. The slot is enabled in the bios and I have ensured it is plugged in.

If it doesn't show up in the bios it may no work at PCIE 2.0 like you guessed.  I'd get an M.2 PCIE slot adapter and stick it in there, PCIE 2.0 will hurt your storage speed anyway since x4 maxes out at 2GB/s vs 4GB/s on PCIE 3.0.

OK, thanks. I will look into an adapter and try that.

Yep, get a adapter and use it as storage as I have with a 2TB M.2 SSD @ PCIe 3.0 no problem.  Make sure it's for PCIe and not SATA, on the adapter.

Use this Associate Code at your checkouts or follow these instructions for Up to 10% OFF on all your EVGA purchases:
