I read a lot of reviews online saying that nvme run hot, stupid me didnt listen perhaps I'm too obsess with the speed and cableless it provide, Any how its done and I have my first ever NVME! It's the Samsung 970 2tb evo plus. Since its my first time using this could someone please give me an input on how to properly handle this kind of device, particularly the heat it generates.
 
 
Things I've done
1. updated the drivers/firmware
2. run benchmark, record the speed & temperature info 
*Running performance benchmark via Samsung Magician tool, It gave me the following result. Sequentials mb/s Read (3540) Write (3355), Random IOPS Read (415,527) Write (398,193). 
 
I recorded the temperature via HWINFO64 *Current* 71 degrees celsius   *Minimum* 41 degrees celsius *Maximum* 72 degrees celsius.
 
3. Bought this heatsink (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QV4W1W6/ref=twister_B07MMFDHG5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) should be here by tomorrow night and will post update as soon as I get it. 
 
Things I've not done... yet
1. Currently my nvme is sitting between my ram and gpu. I was thinking of putting it below my gpu, that way my 120mm fan can cool it. 
2. buy nvme heatsink with small fans on it?

I installed it with the heat pad that came with z390 black and forgot about it.  Runs fine.   I am not concerned about heat as long as I have proper case airflow.
 
72C is fine  

I have a 2 TB Corsair MP510 as my primary system drive. My M.2 NVMe temps run about 40-42C. No heatsink needed but then again I'm running 15 fans in a Corsair 1000D case.
 

I did a benchmark and the temp never exceeded 46C

See how it does with the heatsink. I have the 500GB under my motherboards included heatsink and have yet to see it go over like 55 and that was after adding a lot of heat inside the case running stress tests for a while on GPU and CPU.

I was in the same boat. I checked my MB box & didn't have a screw for it. I had one laying around sized 2.0 x 3mm that fit.

For reference, I use this heatsink:

unlike other heatsink this one uses screws (6 screws) instead of clamp.

I had to improvise and make my own DIY many years back when M.2 was just entering the scene for PC gaming.  Took pieces of heatsinks and thermal tap.  I did enough measurements to make sure it was clear of any GPUs above it when I had SLI running.  Good ol times and she's still purring along.  

I bet its also super expensive! :(

Back then around 2014, the M.2 512 GB PCIe 2.0 x16 SSD cost me around $550. lol  That included spending $50 for warranty since it was being sold as an OEM SSD on newegg and somehow I talked myself into spending that much versus no warranty at all since they were willing to discount the warranty to me in half which only cost me $50 around and than add another $30 on some DIY cooling parts since these things were known to run HOT.  At the end of the day, it wasn't cheap.

Yeah, Thats a lot of money! Does it ever died on you? I wonder how durable nvme is compare to ssd. My corsair neutron xt ssd is dying and I'm about to return it for warranty, since its been 5 years corsair no longer have stock of the same quality so they were willing to send me the mp510 2tb for my 480gb ssd. I asked because they told me as soon as I get it I will only have until February of 2020 for warranty after that I'm on my own. I'm currently looking on the market for some warranty or sell it as new on ebay and buy the same nvme with 5 year warranty.
