I have the GeForce GTX 1060 SC 6GB GDDR5 Video Card. Have had it for 6 months. Now while compiling a video, part way through the fan makes a loud whirling sound, like it's going too fast, then the display shuts off. Any ideas why? The load at the time of crash is only 10% or so. Drivers are up to date. It was unplugged for a month or so, but snapped it properly it seems. Non-demanding tasks are being done.

My system:

CPU - i7 6700KBoard - Z170A M3 GamingRAM - G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAMOS - Windows 10 Pro
GPU - MSI GeForce GTX 1050

Thanks.

Sounds like a power issue to me.

You mean my power supply unit is faulty? Is there a way to determine this?

The psu may not be at fault. It could be a bad pci-e cable, or even a loose pci-e cable. How old is your psu?

PSU is only 3 years old. I can't access it at the moment but will check for loose connections. It seems odd that it works as the video starts to compile, and only about 20 seconds in does it then malfunction. If it were a bad connection, wouldn't it not work at all?
    Thanks.

Yes, you would think that, but sometimes a loose connection can cause what you are seeing.

Testing the card in another pc, or testing with a new psu will also help you figure out the culprit.

ok, gained access. i believe there is only 1 power connection to the unit (which i checked and seems fine) and the only other connection is where the unit is physically connected to the motherboard.

so i recompiled my video, this time it makes it to the end. But the fan never came on. does the fan only come on when the GPU reaches a certain temperature, or should it always come on when in use?

Some video cards do not turn the fans on until a certain temp is reached. You can check the temps of your card using msi afterburner. You can also adjust the gpu fans with the program.

It may be the power connector. I changed wires, then used Precision X1 to run the fan and it ran without shutting down. I have not gotten the GPU temp above 60 yet, but i think problem solved.

    Thanks!
