Hey y'all, I'm getting ready to build a Z390 Dark system (as soon as a board is available) and just was wondering if there is anything I should look out for or need to know before the build.

This is what I have so far:

Intel Core i9-9900K Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.0 GHz Turbo unlocked LGA1151 300 Series 95W
Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16 Desktop Memory (CMD32GX4M2C3200C16)
EVGA CLC 280mm All-In-One RGB LED CPU Liquid Cooler, 2x FX13 140mm PWM Fans, Intel, AMD, 5 YR Warranty, 400-HY-CL28-V1
Phanteks Enthoo Pro Tempered Glass PH-ES614PTG_BK, Black (LOVE this case, can't wait to fill it up!)

And I'm thinking about going with this drive for my main drive:
Seagate FireCuda 510 1TB Performance Internal Solid State Drive SSD PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe 1.3 for Gaming PC Gaming Laptop Desktop (ZP1000GM30001)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QRC1Z94/?coliid=I1DVKWRLF5V503&colid=16ML59XCWGT6H&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I already have (from my old system):
2080 RTX
EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P2 220-P2-1200-X1 80+ PLATINUM 1200W Fully Modular EVGA ECO Mode Includes FREE Power On Self Tester
Creative Zx (that I may not use if the on board sound is great)
a TV card
Several 2 TB SATA drives
BD ROM DVD ROM

ONE HUGE question is, what will I sacrifice as far as other SATA ports (if any) using that M.2 drive? And is that a good drive to use? (It got a good writeup from PC mag)

What I'm thinking from already reading through the forums:

I will need to update the BIOS to the latest version or at least 1.08? to support my new CPU.
My PSU should be fine, BUT may not be? (see some posts about EVGA PSU's not being compatible?)
I should probably check the CMOS battery while the motherboard is still in the box.

did I miss anything??

OH and one more thing, how often do they make these dark boards? Will I be looking at 6 months or more to get one?

OK I think that's everything, thanks for any suggestions.

    1.  Great choice on case.

    2.  Your choice of components look good but I personally like to go with 240mm since the 120mm seem to perform better on rads than the bigger 140mm but that's just me.  If you like the 280mm, that's fine too.

If you change to 240mm, the only thing I might change are the fans to something like Noctua A12 (Newest) or Gentletyphoons as those are the powerhouse fans for rads if you're looking for every degree possible.

If you're looking for bling, that's cool too with fans like Corsair's LL120mm.  I just swamped my top rad fans out along with the rear fan for aesthetics and so far so good.

    3.  For the OS drive.  I would jump on this Samsung 970 EVO 1TB ASAP since it's almost 50% off and it's Samsung, best in the business when it comes to flash memory.

    4.  Should have no problem connecting all your drives to your SATA ports.

    5.  There's a good chance any Z390 MB that will come back to stock will and should have the most up to date BIOS in them.

    6.  As far as PCIe Lane breakdown, I'll leave this image below to give you an idea what you have in store.

Depending where you install your M.2 PCIe OS drive, M.2 PM1 or PM2, your PE3 lane could be disabled but than again, you'd be leaving your M.2 under your probably pretty warm GPU.  I personally would go with something like this.

    PE1 - RTX 2070 (x8)
    PE2 - Empty
PE3 - Empty (Disabled because you installed your OS Drive to PM2, on the second M.2 interface away from the top
    PE4 - Sound Card (x4)

Whether your GPU is x8 or x16 honestly, won't be performance degrading unless you're running 8K+ with high refresh rates which atm afaik, aren't in existent and the GPUs wouldn't be able to handle that kind of content anyways.

You should see some more in stock eventually I think but don't forget, their next 'Z' line from intel and eventually from EVGA will be out this fall iirc.

Hope that cleared a few things for ya and also don't forget, you can use a associate code as seen in my signature to get a bunch of discounts on a variety of hardware and purchases EVGA's store.

I am wondering what TV card you are using. As for drive the Samsung EVO is a great drive but the one you listed is also fine. If I had to pick I would probably go with the Samsung and save some money since Samsung EVO drives are known for great performance.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

Man that's some good info!! I downloaded the manual for the Black earlier and tried to read through it and my eyes crossed, this points me right where I need to be!! thank you!!

I have a Hauppauge Win-Tv HVR 2250, had it for YEARS now and I can't live without it, that is a must!! The sound card I MIGHT be able to do without IF the sound in the Black is decent, I will have to see.

IF I can use 6 SATAs and the M.2 I can leave the add-in SATA card I'm using now out of the build, so that leaves me with:

    RTX 2080 x16 (preferred)
(the M.2 space under the card)
    1 TB M.2
    Zx Sound (if needed)
    (Disabled)
    TV card

THIS is the ONLY thing I don't like about the dark is the shortage of slots, (BUT...it's just so sexy I gotta have it!!) I'm gonna need slots PE2 and PE4, for sound and TV. (or at LEAST TV), and the M.2 cancels PE3...and that SUCKS...BUT I have my SATA's soooo
I think it will work IF I can use at LEAST 4 SATA ports, prefer 6 for my storage tray!!

I'm selling my other parts for the drive(s) SO I have to wait for the Black to come back in stock or I will be out of a PC till it does (I'm gonna MISS this Classified Z270, it's been a ROCK)....SO I may have to hit the plastic to get that Samsung M.2 on sale!! (I hoped to do it all with cash but..,..duty calls)

As far as the cooler goes, I already have the 280mm on my desk, I was thinking bigger would be better, I guess I can always upgrade the fans if needed, HOPEFULLY I won't "need" to overclock this CPU that much *cough* as it looks like a beast, I could care less about the colored lights, Black is just fine with me!!

    TV = IMPORTANT
High grade Sound = VERY important
(I use this PC for EVERYTHING)

I THINK I'm good guys, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

If you're an audiophile, I would go with a separate sound card.  While MB sound cards have come a long way, it's still no match to a quality sound card.

Some of the cards or externals I would look at are either the ASUS Sound Card Essence STX II or the Sound BlasterX G6.  There are others out there but I would do some more research and catch up on some reviews if you're looking to spend top dollar on this top notch sound cards/ext. amps.  I personal use the GX6 and it's brought my Sennheiser PC373Ds to life.  It was an amazing improvement from my MB's audio.

The Z390 Dark will have support for the I9 9900k for sure as the bios that came with release version already had it.
I had a Creative SoundBlaster Z in my previous rig, and personally I found the onboard Creative Sound to be pretty darn good, so I never bothered to install the Z into this rig.

Yeah I think I'm gonna try out the Creative onboard before I install the Zx, "Creative 5.1 Channel HD Audio + EVGA NU Audio (for headphones)", it sounds impressive!!

BTW, I got my Dark board ordered today!!

Now to get the M.2 and some new hard drives, and then start backing up folders.

I have this system running 24/7 @ 4.7 on all cores, and it's rock solid!! I'm gonna do some benchmarks so I can see the difference as well as feel it!! Then this system goes to my daughter and her new husband!

    thanks y'all!!

Have you considered a USB TV card?  I ran multiple Hauppauge PCI cards in my old BeyondTV Server back in the day.  The newer USB options have improved over the years.  Or, entertain a kick-butt USB DAC/Preamp better than the NU card.  You will need to sacrifice audio or TV card if you want x16 for GPU.

Oh yeah no doubt!! I can't wait.

The board should be here Monday so I have been studying the manual and planning out my options.

I have been looking at benchmarks and reviews about running my 2080 in PCI 3.0 x8 so I can use my layout with my TV card AND SB Zx with the 970 EVO in PM2, and even though the actual performance loss is small, it seems it is not a great idea.
The conclusion is (using a 2080ti not and average 2080) that the card can saturate a slot running in 3.0 x8 and even exceed it, so, unless I am totally wrong, to see maximum performance on this setup I really need to run that GPU at x16?

SO, I was wondering, if I put that 970 EVO in PM1 instead of PM2 (IF it will fit), which will put it partially behind my GPU, what are the actual consequences of doing this? It should still get air flow with 2 140mm fans blowing air in from the front, one drawing out the back, and my CPU radiator blowing out the top of the case. I know heat is always bad but how hot do these little M.2 things get? (and why put the best M.2 slot where the GPU is going to go anyways??)

BUT IF this can be done safely I can use PE3 and PE4 for my TV and sound.

I wish I had a good review of the SB sound from this board, it would make these decisions a lot easier...lol

oh well back to studying, so far it looks like it's going to be an easy build, I just want to get it right the FIRST time!
