https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/both_intel_and_amd_are_preparing_processor_launches_in_october/1 The release of AMD's Ryzen 3rd Generation processors has caused a dramatic shift within the CPU market, eroding Intel's position as top dog. With Zen 2, AMD is offering competitive levels of single-threaded performance and gaming performance while also delivering more cores/threads than the competition at each price point. Competition within the x86 CPU market hasn't been this tight for over a decade, and things are set to get better. DigiTimes has reported that both Intel and AMD plan to release new "top-end desktop CPUs" in October. This information comes via sources at motherboard manufacturers. For AMD this can only mean one thing, Zen 2-based Threadripper processors are coming. We know that AMD has their Ryzen 9 3950X up their sleeve, but AMD has already committed to a September release date. The Ryzen 9 3950X will top off AMD's AM4 lineup by offering sixteen cores and 32 threads. AMD cannot go bigger on its AM4 socket with Zen 2, making October's rumoured "top-end" processors likely to be new Threadripper series parts. On the Intel side, an October CPU launch could mean many things. Cascade Lake could be coming to X299, and Intel's long-rumoured Comet Lake series of processors could be making their way to Z390 or a newer socket. Either way, new Intel offerings will have to compete with AMD's Ryzen 3rd Generation offerings. This means that Intel will need to be competitive in terms of both pricing and performance. Great news for both Intel and AMD fans. I am curious about Threadripper pricing.

now if we could get closer competition in the high end graphics cards too . We would see better performance & pricing .

The Threadripper offering are going to have to have huge core counts to justify going that route in comparison to flagship Ryzen 3000-series. Ryzen is eroding into Threadripper market share, so I have reservations on how Threadripper might play out this time around.

I thought the AMD 5700XT is equal to and passes the 2070 and same for the 5700super and 2060super. (Or about the same)

Don't forget that Threadripper also has a huge amount of PCI-E lanes as compared with RYZEN. It will be interesting to see what AMD brings to the consumer with Threadripper this time around to justify its purchase. The 3950 Ryzen comes in September with 16 cores.

Does that mean the end of AM4 socket?

The PCIe bandwidth is appealing, but becoming less important in an era where GPU manufacturers can't even be bothered to do multi-GPU right anymore. I suppose you could jam a lot of M.2 PCIe adapter cards into the machine for fast drive space. 16-core Ryzen in a consumer socket mobo seems plenty in 2020 IMHO. Seems on point and I doubt Intel has anything that will price match it.

What is the benefit of all those PCIe lanes? I might return my Aorus Extreme, and Ram kit, and wait for TR if that socket has more longevity.

PCIe 4 will be short lived because of PCIe 5 already making waves. My guess it'll last 2-3 years at most. Both Intel and AMD will shift focus quickly now that the spec is out there.

The benefit is most of those pci-e lanes are on cpu, not chipset fillers so less lag, better throughput etc...

I've often wondered about the speed and latency difference between direct CPU to PCIe lane peripherals, VS, CPU to North Bridge to PCIe peripherals. Has there ever been any investigations into this? It seems there would be a difference simply from the existence between these two. EDIT: Is it considered the North Bridge or South Bridge?

There is more latency and nothing comes close to say things direct to the CPU like PC RAM for example but I don't know the exact latency benches off the top of my head. I remember a couple of decades ago, I would dream of the day along with some other geeks when we'll have storage space direct to the CPU at basically RAM speeds. I also remember we used to use some old windows app a while back for storage cache on RAM or something like that I think. Can't remember the name.

Well it's too late to return it now. I haven't shopped for a system in over 10yrs and I use to check the return policy before buying and this dang motherboard is non-refundable so I guess I'm stuck unless I sell it. Oof, :(
