Hey all,

I've recently started experiencing issues with my 2080ti Black which I've had for about 4 months now. Issue seems to be that the card is hitting a sort of "temp cap" where it's ramping the fan speed to above 100% briefly (3840RPM whereas 3500RPM is 100%). I've noticed most often only on one fan is increasing while the other stays at the set fan speed.

I've had the same setup running since I purchased the card but only now has this issue begun occurring. I have had the fan speed capped at ~63% for the majority of the time as it's around the point where I can handle the noise but it is set to increase up to 85% if temps push over 84 degrees, although it has never hit this point and currently doesn't seem to hit this point before pushing the fan speed. The card drops to 1485 MHz Boost Clock before it ramps the fan above 100%.

Some more info on my setup:
Case is an R6 with 2x 140mm Noctua front intake and 1x out rear.
CPU (9700k) sits at 55c under load, air cooled Noctus D15.
No overclocking on the card.
Ambient temp is 22c , I was not experiencing this issue with ambient of 30c during summer 4 months ago.
Test scenario using Heaven, however the same issue is experienced in games as well (Black Desert Online, Path of Exile, Metro Exodus etc).

Am I just out of luck here and must let the fan curve push itself up to 85% to keep this card cooled? If this is the situation, does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep this thing cool and quiet at the same time? I would much prefer to be unable to hear the card rather than have peak performance from it. I just find it strange that it seemed to be happy to run on this setup for so long until now.

Hi darno26 and welcome to the EVGA forums!

What is the temperature on the card when the gpu clock drops to 1485 and is this in both heaven and the games that you mentioned?

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses.

From what I can tell, the card holds steady at 84c, then when the clock hits 1485 it's at 85c which is when the fan ramps up. This seems to happen in all situations, benchmarks and games that are utilising the graphics card fully. I've played with the fan curve a bit and am experiencing the ramp up on Fan#1 even with the fans at 70% hitting that same temp threshold at the same clock speed.

I updated my nvidia drivers to 430.86 a couple of hours ago after experiencing this issue for about a week or so, I can't remember what my previous version was sorry, but I did experience the same issue on that version as well. Windows is v1809 - 17763.503. I haven't installed any new updates recently as far as I'm aware.

I haven't modified any Nvidia settings or profiles.

Monitor is 1440p 144hz and has been since I got the system 4 months ago. There's no buildup on dust in the system, I clean the filters regularly and checked the system as you mentioned it just to be sure.

GPU mounted in the PCIe slot or Vertically ?

    Case fans @ 100% ?

Are GPU fans linked together ?

    Running X1 / what Version number ?

To me it sounds like it's getting some good load and or the temps are higher because of your ambient temps compared to winter season hypothetically speaking and so it's protecting itself by downclocking/throttling and could be closer to the max of 89c.

Temps never stay the same all year around therefore you should NEVER cap the fan speed because you're forcing your GPU to only work with said RPM, no matter what load/air temps it gets.  Again, it sounds like it's down clocking to cool off.  If you hit 80c, I'd set a fan curve to be close to 100% because you don't want it to get close to its max.  Find a happy medium by testing full load on it to see where the GPU temps average and play with the fan speed to see where it won't change as much so you don't have that nuisance of fan audibles.  I mean you can't really expect a 'silent GPU' on the high end line.

My only advise if sound is still an issue is to slap a Hybrid Kit on it to not only get lower temps but possibly have less audibles which it usually does but nothing's a guarantee in this game.

GPU is mounted in the PCIe slot, nothing fancy going on.

    Case fans are at 100%

The GPU fans are linked as far as I'm aware?

    X1 is not installed.

Re JackBauer; I'd agree with you except for the fact it was running perfectly this whole time at 63% fan speed no matter what I threw at it and only recently started doing this. I haven't changed anything on my end as far as I'm aware. It just seems very odd that this issue would pop up now and not previously. And why is only one fan ramping while the other one doesn't?

No way Metro Exodus on 1440p/144hz @ ultra settings (presumably speaking if that's what you had set for full eye candy) would only need 63% fan speed.

Think of each fan's duty to cool that section of the board.  The fan you're most likely talking about is the one in charge of the GPU temp which is roughly above it or w/e.  Than you have another fan on the VRM section (Power section) which won't spin much cause it doesn't get super hot there.  Again, don't choke your fans from doing their job when temps rise.  You're speed drops because it's throttling/downclocking because you're temps are in the 85c+ range.  The GPU is protecting itself.

I understand the reasons behind throttling and downclocking. I understand that they perform as expected, I am more curious as to why this issue has only occurred recently when I've had the card for a number of months in this setup.

For Metro specifically, I was not able to reach 144 fps, nor was it running with everything on max, but the card was able to underclock itself to the point where it did not need to ramp the fans or crush the framerate at 63% fan speed until a week ago.

Maybe there's some confusion here but do you have the fan speed locked @ 63%?

Does it run cooler @1440 & 120 Hz

How are you controlling the GPU fans ?

Even though you see Max temp of 85C & the Rated Max GPU Temp in C = 89 --> it could be Nvidia Boost 4.0 doing its thing to protect the GPU

Sounds like your gpu temps have went up since the summer time. Might be time to checkout the thermal paste on the gpu. I would also clean the gpu cooler out with compressed air.

Sounds like a similar issue that a few of us had in this thread.

    h**ps://forums.evga.com/Fan-1-Sudden-High-RPM-at-80C-RTX-2080-Ti-XC-m2931484.aspx

A lot of us though were seeing the fan turbo mode kicking in when reported temp was lower than 85 degrees.

85 degrees is the programmed bios safety limit where the fans will run the loud turbo mode.

It just came down to bad TIM that needed replacing.

My original fan curve was always an gradual incline to 63% fan speed at 84c and then a sharper increase from 85 onwards.

The fans are being controlled by an MSI Afterburner profile.

I've done a little more testing, modified the fan curve up to 70% at 84c. The issue is still occurring even though the card is not even underclocking itself to below boost clock (1545), the clock speed doesn't drop below 1665 and the temp isn't going over 84c.

I'll double check the thermal paste spread when I get a chance, see if that could be the issue. I've also requested my local PC shop order in a hybrid kit because it seems I might just be out of luck when it comes to keeping this thing quiet with the stock cooler.

I think going with a hybrid kit is a great idea and you won't be disappointed.

    Quick update.

Didn't even get a chance to re-apply the thermal solution. I was playing some Path of Exile and I had capped the games frame rate to 150fps and put the card on default fan curve so the card wouldn't need to push so hard and the fans would be quiet. Seemed fine for the past day, not going over 70c. I got home from work today, started playing some Path of Exile again and after 15 minutes the card kept getting hotter and hotter with the fans pushing to 85% and then both fans pushed to 3800rpm and my PC crashed three seconds later.

Might be time to consider RMAing the card?

I honestly didn't get a good look as I glanced over before it crashed but I'm pretty sure it was at 84c.

Sounds like you may have a psu issue. What is the make/model/age of your psu?

And you're powering the card with two separate pci-e power cables instead of a single pci-e cable that splits into dual 6+2's?

Apologies about the delay, it has been a hectic week.

The card is powered by two separate power cables.

The issue has gotten worse over the past week. The card can no longer keep itself cool under default fan curve with no overclocking during gameplay. The below image is of Path of Exile gameplay where the card hits 82c-83c and fan#1 constantly ramps up to 3840RPM even with the default fan curve being at 80%.

Turns out no where can source a Hybrid Kit at the moment and the fact it cant cool itself under default settings is making me think it might be faulty so I'm not willing to shell out $300aud for a cooler anyway.
