Microsoft PS/2 Mouse in Device Manager is displaying "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

I found this by accessing the "Hidden Devices" Option.

Is this normal? and if it's not, is there a way to fix it?

I've tried uninstalling the Device and restarting, Reinstalling the Chipset Drivers and Editing the Registry to enable PS/2 Devices on Startup.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

have you tried having the OS search for drivers?  you might just be able to force a driver by selecting one manually.

I apologize for leaving that one out. I did try to update the Driver using the update selection as well as search for Drivers using Windows Update. But with no luck. I could try and Manually install it... lemme try that rq.

Which one of the Drivers should I choose? There are multiple PS/2 Mouse Drivers.

Better yet. I'm going to take a nap and come back to this in a little bit. Maybe putting some fresh eyes on it will help. Stayed up too long trying to figure this crap out.

It could be a lot of different things. What I would start with is checking for any motherboard driver and bios updates. After that I would look at anything that is connected to the computer as even a USB hub could be showing up like this. So even things like a monitor should be considered.

Go to the item, right click, go to properties...go to details....open the pull down menu, find hardware IDs...click on it...then
put the top most hardware ID into google...it will tell you what the item is.

Update the Chipset Drivers Intel® Chipset Driver for Windows Version: 10.1.18010.8141 (Latest) as well.
Also from Microsoft postings to use a PS/2 Mouse or KB they need to be connected to the Computer Before you start a Windows 10 Install.
And make sure it is Enabled in the Bios. Or after connect as device should clear it as well.

    Ok, so.

transdogmifier, Googled the First HW ID and no luck. Only thing it pointed me to was a possible issue with the ACPI Drivers. (ACPI\VEN_PNP&DEV_0F03), (ACPI\PNP0F03) and  (*PNP0F03) <---this is everything in the HW ID Box starting with Top to Bottom.

bcavnaugh, I installed the chipset drivers you provided. no dice.
where do I turn it on in the bios? I have looked in (what I believe to be) all places.

Cool GTX, I don't use a ps/2 mouse or keyboard. but if there is an issue with the port I would like to get the board replaced... if you pay money for something (especially $500) it should work as intended.

    Pretty much in a nutshell...
Is the Yellow Triangle normal when there isn't a device plugged into the ps/2 slot?
And will it go away if I plug a Device into it?

I would test this out myself but I don't own a ps/2 Device.

Do not Hot Plug PS/2 Device Mouse or Keyboard.
If not used I would Disable the PS/2 Support in the Bios.
The use for it is mostly Overclocking from what I have read, Extreme Overclocking that is.

    Maybe this from Post https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2474532

So I just went through this, here is a quick summary that might help others   Getting into trouble:
    1. Saw the warning triangle on PC icon in "Devices" window, hmmmm...
    2. Ran the troubleshooter, it wanted to reinstall driver for Microsoft PS/2 Mouse, ok fine do that
    3. Restarted, mouse no longer works, dang it, notification says I need to finish installing a device driver, no obvious way to do that and the board (Z170 Classified K) doesn't even have a PS/2 port, so what do you want from me?
    4. Flail around trying to get the mouse working for an hour, fail, google for help, find this article, ah ha!
      Solution:
    1. Upgrade bios to latest (it was out of date)
    2. System restore back to time when the mouse was still working, mouse is back!
    3. Go into device manager, show hidden devices, uninstall useless/toxic PS/2 Mouse device
    4. Restart, PC device icon is now happy, mouse is happy, everyone is happy.
      Thanks guys!

To me that looks like USB controller not working properly. Check the driver that the intel USB hub is using....

    ACPI driver for something....

Sorry for the late reply fellas! Been under the Weather.

The Support Techs and I have been collaborating on this issue and we have come to the conclusion that its an issue with Windows 10. When there is no Device plugged into the PS/2 Port on a Windows 10 system it will give you an "Error 24". Once you connect a Device (PC powered down of course) it will then register and work normally.

We came to this conclusion yesterday evening. I'm sorry I didn't post sooner.

For you fellas who helped me out, Thank You!

It did seem odd but I have seen unknown driver issues show up oddly in Windows so I don't always believe it's a PS2 mouse. The device manager tip above is a good one though that I will have to remember. Also as shocking as it is PS2 does seem to have some advantages for keyboards and you can find people who really love the mechanical spring IBM keyboard switches from the 80's.

The only good argument for an old PS2 mouse or keyboard to me is they can start up a PC on some motherboards. I used to have a Asus board with a PS2 keyboard and had it set to just tap the spacebar and the system would boot up. Would not work with a USB keyboard.

That is me in the picture, anyone else ever pet a live Lion?
