xmp auto vs setting 1 has no heat difference so i keep it at xmp1
using prime 95 v26.6
 
no oc/xmp1 running small fft = 55-59c
 
4.5 oc, adaptive +25 offset= 70-80c in a 83f deg room
 
I see no reason to try and go higher.  Im new at this, might I be overlooking something?  or do I have a no so great chip?

Room is 83degF
Mobo is set on adaptive not auto
Noctua coolers are very easy to mount, I recently got most of the dust out there is good air movement through the radiators.

You need to know that the TjMax temperature for an i7-6700K is 100C..That's the temp that the individual cores will begin to throttle down at if CPU Thermal Protection is enabled in the BIOS, which it is by default, and should be.
 
It's generally recommended to keep the cores from getting within 10C of TjMax..So for your cores, you should try to keep them from going over 90C during load testing.
 
It's also very important to know what the Vcore (CPU Core Voltage) is under load testing..You can use CPU-Z to check it (and other things) while running IntelBurnTest (IBT)..There's also the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for stability/load testing..IBT will really get it cooking..Watch the cores temperatures closely no matter what you use..I use Real Temp.
 
You also need to know about Load Line Calibration and Offset Mode and how they affect Vcore.
 
If you search for 'i7-6700K overclocking guide' you'll find lots of them that you should read before going very far..ROG has some decent guides on Overclocking Core i7-6700K and CPU Core Voltage Offset Mode Overclocking that you can glean the basics from, although your mobo BIOS settings will be 'different but the same'.

It seems like the room temps are very high. You might want to try a profile that works for the summer and one that works well in the winter since you are pretty warm.

What Case & case fans can make a big difference in temp also

If you are unsure of the quality of the TIM or question the proper installation of your cooler --> get some more TIM, remove the heatsink & look at the pattern that the old TIM left on Both the CPU & heatsink.
 
Any dry TIM or missed (empty spots) & if the heatsink was Not kept level when installing Could be the cause of the temp issue your seeing.
 
I do not know your experience level, or what TIM you applied
 
I like MX-4 it is a low cost TIM that plain works.  Any Quality TIM should do, everyone has their favorite flavor.
 
Make sure the heatsink is kept flat (parallel) to the CPU, tighten the mounting screws in the "X" pattern, 1 - turn at a time,
working Top Left to Bottom Right, then Top Right to Bottom Left --> in an X pattern

83f room is too hot? whats is a optimal testing temp?
to be honest i didn't realize 4.5 isn't even much of an OC   Im better off with no OC =drastically lower temps/ no crashes (from long gaming)
is system stability better with ram @  xmp 1 ? or complete stock settings?

 
80C running Prime95 is good..83F ambient is rather toasty for electronic stuff..4.5GHz isn't much of an overclock and wouldn't really be noticeable except in benchmark scores..An X.M.P Profile should set your RAM to it's rated speed/timing/voltage/command rate specs instead of the lower/slower SPD specs used for compatibility reasons across different platforms..Sometimes there's more than one X.M.P. profile to choose from to overclock the RAM.
