I hate to dredge up an old topic, but through out all of what I've searched, what seems to me like the general conclusion is that the bios needs to be updated on the card. But not one of the threads that I've come across, actually has a direct link to download the bios for the card, and I don't know if I'm looking in the right places to find it. Current bios version of the card is 84.04.28.00.71

The symptoms are fairly similar to others I've read, but mine specifically are:
I'll be playing a game like Fallout 4, or even an online sim like Second Life using the Firestorm viewer. Randomly, usually once a day, all my monitors go black, the game crashes, and a few seconds later, the monitors go back to normal, and I'm staring at my desktop as if the game were never opened.

My card is not overheating, it stays below 70c with the fan set at a constant 70% speed. So... if a direct link to the bios file can be provided, that would be awesome. If there's a better solution though, great! =^_^=

Inside the windows event viewer under administrative events does it say the gpu driver has crashed and recovered?

The only thing I can find related to the GPU is an instance called NVIDIA OpenGL Driver. Here's what each tab says...

    General:
The description for Event ID 1 from source NVIDIA OpenGL Driver cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Unable to recover from a kernel exception. The application must close.

    Error code: 3 (subcode 2)
     (pid=2768 tid=4516 firestorm-releasex64.exe 64bit)

    Visit for more information.

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

    Details:
    -System
      -Provider   [ Name]NVIDIA OpenGL Driver
      -EventID1   [ Qualifiers]49152
       Level2   Task0   Keywords0x80000000000000  -TimeCreated   [ SystemTime]2019-05-08T00:34:41.052874000Z
       EventRecordID720448   ChannelApplication   Computerspafmagic-PC   Security
-EventData   Unable to recover from a kernel exception. The application must close. Error code: 3 (subcode 2) (pid=2768 tid=4516 firestorm-releasex64.exe 64bit) Visit for more information.

This shows up 5 times. I can only assume those were the crashes.

Negative... never touched the system ram for overclocking, and I have the version of the I7 8700 that can't be overclocked.

    *edit* For reference: I7 8700 3.2GHz, 32 gigs DDR 4 Ram, Windows 10 64bit, MSI Motherboard

Does the issue occur over multiple gpu drivers versions?

Recently downloaded the latest drivers, but the previous 2 prior to this one... yes. I'll know soon enough if THIS version of the driver does it.

Brought the core and memory clock speeds down as far as they can go -501 and -502MHz the other night. So far so good. But not getting my hopes up... yet.

I would have to pluck it out of the computer to find that out... it's been so long. I know it was a generic gaming psu, it's likely 3 years old at least. 1,000 watts with both molex and sata ports.

speaking of sata ports on a side note, I ended up having to get molex to sata adapters for my hard drives because the actual sata plugs developed shorts some how.

Well your psu may be the cause. Only way to test that would be to use a different psu, or test your video card in another known good working system to see if you can replicate your issue in another rig.

If you bought your PSU online ... maybe you can find the information

However the SATA short issue & only 3 yr old - Screams - Replacement Time - maybe its under Mfg warranty ?

I bought the PSU direct from a computer shop and have since moved. I doubt it's under warranty at this point at any rate. Will need to save a little to get a new one.

I'm still waiting for the crash to happen with the clock dialed down -500MHz. Initially, I had the GPU core clock at +100MHz, and the memory clock was not touched when the problem eventually started. I failed to mention that originally.

Sounds like an unstable overclock was the problem then. Everything works fine at stock speeds on the gpu?

make sure your Not OC the PCie lanes in your MB BIOS settings - BCLK needs to be set correctly

Some MB will OC the BCLK automatically

So... yeah it seems at this point... with everything at stock settings, there's no more black screen crashes.

As for over clocking the PCie lanes, or what BCLK is, I'm not entirely following..?
