Hi guys, looking for some advice on rad placement and fan config for building my first water cooling loop.  I'll be using an H500M case which has 2x200mm fans in front stock, room for 75mm of space behind the front panel (with the 200's (or any other fan) still in place on the front side of it) and then up top it has 43mm of clearance below the top and above underneath the top cover.

I was thinking of 30mm 360 up top with the fans in pull config between the top frame and the top cover since 25mm fans would offer more clearance for the air to bend and exit the sides of the top panel than a 30mm rad would (and I'd have to cut holes for the fittings to get the rad on the top side).  Alternatively I thought about putting a 45mm rad in the front.  Leave the 200's on the front side of the case, and put 3x120's on the back side of the rad basically a push/pull config.  Alternately I could move the 200's up top and then either do 3x120's push or 6x120's push/pull in front on a 45mm but that also changes the look of the H500 series with putting 3 smaller fans in front.

This is my first loop so I'm just not sure what the best config would be.  Also trying to avoid negative air pressure which I'm concerned might occur if I put the 200's up top because they can move a combined 180cfm at max speed plus the rear 140mm exhaust.  Although they likely would never run that high especially with stuff on water.

However my GPU is still going to be a 1070 SC with AXC cooling so I need to thing about airflow for that.  Right now those 200's do a great job feeding fresh air to it.  It caps at about 63C under load in stuff like Heaven or other GPU intensive tests with just the default fan profile and SC clocks.

    Hey,

    Imho watercooling your build is a bit useless because you won't gain more performance with it since your GTX 1070 overclocking wont change much and its power consumption / heat generated is not very high anyway (150W max vs 300W for high end GFX cards).

    If I were you I would instead use the money to upgrade the GFX card

    It's not the current build in my signature that will be cooled, it's one I'm going to be building but re-using the 1070 in since it's only a year  old (had planned to wait for the 2xxx cards but my 780 died 6 months out of warranty).  I'm going to be going with either a 9700K or the new upcoming Ryzen 3xxx chips and eventually do plan to add the GPU in to the loop once I upgrade the 1070.  I plan to be overclocking whatever I get, but I'm also after quieter since I've started streaming so that's part of my reasoning for going water, and also just to do it cause I've always wanted to but over 20 years of building PC's just haven't done it.

    Well, apparently there's a new solution to this.  Apparently there are actually 200mm rads.  I might be trying to stuff a 400mm rad in the front.  It's not officially supported but if I yank the drive cage shroud it might fit.

    It's not worth it with a 1070. Make a watercooled build once you have enough money to buy a high end card like a 1080ti / 2080ti :)

    I'm just trying to cool the CPU right now with room for expansion to a GPU later. I looked at AIO coolers but it sounded like they weren't worth it and I want to do this once. I also like the look of liquid setups and so I'm building the new system for looks too. It may not "need" it but I'm doing it anyway. Sorry if you don't agree.

    The radiator size, including how thick & fin count will determine the cooling capacity.

    You could build your loop with the intention of adding the GPU at a later date.

    The largest Radiator that will fit - I'd look at those that are either 45mm or 60mm thick

    At a minimum a 360mm x 45mm (120mm x 3 = 360mm ---> Area 43,200 sq mm )

    How ever a 420mm offer much more cooling area if it will fit your build (140mm x 3 = 420mm --->58,800 sq mm )

    Yeah it's the H500M so no 420 in that, and probably not a 45 up top based on specs but I might have to make a mockup and test fit.  Otherwise I could put it in front I guess.

    Per Cooler Master H500M

    H500M Product Sheet PDF

    Top :   120mm, 140mm, 240mm, 280mm, 360mm ---> (Max Thickness Clearance 43mm) - [limited room] - look at the EK radiators  PE     or the SE

    Front:  120mm, 140mm, 240mm, 280mm, 360mm ---> (70mm clearance w/radiator lid & M.port removed )

    Rear:  120mm, 140mm

    280mm Radiator = Area  39,200 sq mm  (If length is an issue then use this one - [80mm shorter is over 3 inches])

    360 Radiator = Area 43,200 sq mm

    Plan for room for the:  Fans, Fittings, Hose, Reservoir, Pump & access to tighten hose clamps

    So maybe a 38mm PE up top 360 & a 45mm CE 280 up Front  ---> or the 360 up top for Now - just CPU - then if you want to add a GPU add the 280 in front

    It is Best to assemble the PC & take actual measurements

    That way you will see what you have for room around things like the RAM.

    Water builds are All about Planning, you will assemble & disassemble the Rig many times before you are done.

    Thanks!  Yeah I've been watching a ton of watercooling tutorials on various youtube channels and it's been really helpful.  Especially learning about how to plan it etc.  That's why I'm curious about what I'll actually be able to get up top.  BPS Customs did a build in the H500M on their channel with a 240 or 280 AIO which is still long enough to be over the motherboard and the RAM area and somehow they got it up top with both the rad and the fans on the underside of the top panel where there's only supposed to be 43mm of clearance.  I had thought about buying the watercooling stuff now to play with it in my current system which is currently installed into the H500M and get some experience with running lines and filling/bleeding/etc.  However I'm realizing that may not be a good idea since the design of the current mobo etc. might affect radiator compatibility differently than whatever I end up with (Z390 or X570)

    Hey flyinion, in case you haven't seen it in the stickies in this forum section is a wealth of water cooling info. Gathered by CoolGTX, and helped by other suggestions. Might be some helpful info for you if you haven't reviewed it. I enjoy water cooling my hardware for cool and also quiet you mentioned. If you're going with soft tube for the first time, I would suggest getting some quick disconnects. This allows you to disassemble for different reasons without draining the loop and saves a big mess. It does add to the cost however. I hope you enjoy building your new project.

    Thanks!  Yeah I will probably check out some quick disconnects.  I'll definitely have a drain port at least on the pump/res though.  Yep I've seen the list of stuff and looked at a lot of it.  There's so much info out there it gets hard to sort through for someone new to it though.  That post has enough links in it to be full on information overload for someone new.
