Hey guys,
Just got the Asus ROG maximus XI hero board Z390 and have my old Auztentech forte card, was wondering would the dedicated sound card still perform better then the ASUS onboard Supreme FX sound ? I've uploaded pics for references..

I would say use the on board sound since it is much a most up to date hardware. You can test both the on board sound and the forte to see which one is best for you.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Audio is subjective. The only way you will know which one sounds better to you, is to test it. When you do test it, try out the front panel vs rear panel, see if you notice any difference, when listening to the same music.

    • Realtek S1220 supports up to 32bit/192kHz
    • Auztentech forte card supports 24bit/96kHz

I have been using that same motherboard (Maximus XI Hero) until about a week ago, and the integrated sound is surprisingly good on headphones, although I have not connected external speakers to it. Also, I am not an extreme audiophile, so my untrained ears may not be the best to take advice from, lol.

Your issue - which has been mentioned and may be the biggest issue - is that you may not be able to find decent drivers for a 10 year old sound card, so you could end up doing yourself a disservice dropping that card in. Additionally, you would use up PCIe lane(s) in the process, which may or may not matter depending on your build.

MSim is right that there can be a difference between front and rear panels, which mostly seems to be dependent on the case's cable shielding and quality of the jacks, and can add a bit of hiss as a result. In my previous case (Corsair Air 540) the volume was significantly lower using the front panel too. The rear motherboard panel is usually the better option if you're using the motherboard's sound.

Ultimately the best way to know is to try it and see how it sounds to you! :)
