It's too much... for technology usable very short time it's too much.
It's different if you pay some music component or instrument or something usable 10-20 years.
But simply for technology usable max 5 years and after 3 years become obsolete over 1K is insane.
Maybe I'm thankful to NVIDIA because Turing was turning point for many gamers I see that, many of people who are force to buy second hand GPU and pay half of the price will continue to do that. If you delay gaming of new games you save a lot of money.

I understand but consider that there are much more expensive hobbies, take motorsport where you pay from few hundred to a grand and up for each tyre that will last just a couple of laps, with Moore's law dying each gen last longer, we are in 2019 and 5 years ago Maxwell was released which still can play any game at reasonable settings, in the past obsolescence was much worst, try to play a game released in 2005 with a GPU of the 2000s...

Vlada011No any reason to high end GPU cost over 500$, CPU 300-400$ and Motherboard 300$.

Have you considered BOM, manufacturing and R&D cost or just maunder?

The biggest thing allowing games from 2019 to be played on a video card from 2014 would be the rise of the console market ports. Now the latest games you can see playing on a PS4 or Xbox One that came out 7 years ago. When we see the next generation of consoles we will see a major jump in what is expected for a PC to be able to do. Luckily the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X have given publishers a reason to really add support for 4K textures and HDR support in most games. Just keep in mind the publishers job is to always make as much money as possible.

My biggest and probably the only issues I had with a pair of 780s was chocking me at 3 GBs of Vram.  Honestly if they had more and I wasn't that limited on 1080p/1440p, I'd still be gaming on them @ around 40-60 FPS or higher (I think) with most titles of today.

That's true, but process advancing slowed down, back in the 2000 we had a new GPU which was twice as fast every what? 6 months? heck we had twice as fast CPUs every 12/18 months at that time

The GTX 780 TI is on par with the GTX 970 (I own both) and at 1080p you can play at 60fps (maybe not exactly locked) with medium/high settings in many new games

Ah, well mine were the non-Ti's and iirc, a quad set of SLI 780s (non-Ti) @ 100% scaling (GL with that lol)  would be on par with a 1080 Ti or 2080 ti I think last time I checked benchmark scores so I know with this 2080 Ti I replaced those 2-way 780 SLIs was worth it or at least I force myself to believe that, especially at it's price range.

Going from 2 GTX 780 to an RTX 2080 Ti is a huge jump in gaming performance, I would like to experience that too

Patience was surely tested.  I almost pulled the trigger in the 10 series but glad I waited it out.

Price of RTX2080Ti is still abnormal.
Lower price change very little. Next time if they go with lower price result will be similar as well.

It's fact that 40% of gamers or even 50% need to change their approach to gaming because prices and to push their computers literary until they died and become useless for gaming and to play graphically demanding games at least 2 years after launch date. Or serious decrease in details and resolution.

The price drops were indeed minimal.

We'll raise the price and then sell it at what we want and say 'It's on sale' ((Dr. Evil laugh))

Re: Nvidia RTX 20-series price cuts swoop in 2019/04/15 22:43:36 (permalink)
well i bought a gtx 1080Ti about 2 weeks ago.. 770€ ( my wallet stills hurts)
and all i have to say is...  OMG what a beast of a CARD at 1440p! fulleye candy including hairworks
shadow of tomb raider? no problem at max settings everything
AC odyssey? no problem at max settings and resolution quality up to 200% ( it eats up tons OF VRAM  9GB and above!!!) and totally worth it and i play a 35FPS average... and i do not care.... cause strangely i do not feel the lack of frames on screen... dunno why! stunning beautiful game!
Metro exodus? bahh  no problem at max settings here for sure.. 80% of the time above 75 FPS.... finished it... sad story but cool game!

i am amazed at the raw power this card has! truly amazed!
many people are still after the 1080Ti's but no luck...
almost no one here wants to pay about 400€ extra for some minor shadows and reflections in 3 or 4 games that cost a ton of fps....

lets hope intel alleged gpu's changes the game in near future...

Re: Nvidia RTX 20-series price cuts swoop in 2019/04/23 04:29:23 (permalink)
just speculating here

Ampere will be HPC only I think
Nvidia has divided their GPU into two different camps - one HPC and one consumer

HPC does NOT NEED turing cores - and other stuff like video encoders- but more AI and cuda cores and maybe CPU cores
so Nvidia may be well pose to introduce ampere watt,Ohm,Currie,Einstein,Oppenheimer ....and other Physicist names

Consumer may be more specialized and may add other specialized cores
and following turing you may see Computer scientist names instead - like BOOLE,LOVELACE BABBAGE,DADDA,Van Dam (LOL),Eckert.Hopper,Kahn (lol) ,Maunchly,Moore,Von Neuman,Wheeler

It maybe have HPC similarities like tensor and cuda core counts - but there will be differences from now on
