These thick cables and shielding are ridiculous. You can't really bend them, snake them... if you try and pack them behind the motherboard in the case they take up a HUGE amount of room and you can't close up the box without Mashing everything in. And then maybe you need just one power connection for an SSD, but you have 3 other empty adapters on the cable just taking up space. This is making cable management ridiculous. Cables used to be flat, now they are basically thick, rigid hoses. Why is this? What are the alternatives?

Welcome to the Forum It is normal for a 1600 Watt Power Supply to have Heaver Duty Cabling then say a 650 Watt Power Supply. Myself I would Never Use Flat Power Supply Cables. Why are you using a 1600 Watt Power Supply for?

A 1600watt PSU has to be able to carry far more current. Especially if it happens in a single rail setup. The thick cable is necessary but as mentioned in post number 2 very few people actually need one. Cryptominers and folding at home dedicated PCs are the only reasons I can think of.

By the way if you are thinking about drawing that much power make sure your home circuit breakers can handle it.

The 1600 W was unloaded on me by the salesperson to replace a 1000w that would have been fine for an i9 ten core cpu, 2080 founders edition GPU, 3 X m.2, 1 SSd, 1 HDD 4TB. 64GB ram expandable to 128. Asus Prime Deluxe II. He was out of 1k psus. I do have an extra 1k PSU handy, which I was going to use for my kid's gamer. It's great because it is half the size, but now that the 1600W is all unpacked and parts are all over, I was just going to use it. I know. I should be able to get by with 850W with this setup. But the Rope thick cables, I just realized, are really, really hard to cable manage. I was going to keep them for the MB, the CPU and the GPU, but for the other low voltage devices like ssd, optical drives, fan hub, USB hub, i was just going to use some flat low shield cables I have handy. What do you guys think of the combo strategy? Or should I just ditch the 1600 and set it aside for a future monster project? We do have the extra 1k on hand.

One thing to keep in mind though is the fan on modern quality PSU only spins when it needs to come on. Since most builds are not coming anywhere near 1600W the fan would probably never turn.

Wow. I feel like I have some brothers out there (not gender assuming) Fabulous. Thanks for the responses. So much has changed in building in the last year alone. It's unbelievable. I figured out a way to arrange the peripheral SSD, HDD and Optical drive close to each other while maximizing Air flow and only used ONE spare flat patch cable to service those. They will be low draw and rarely used because the integrated 3x M.2s will be doing all the scratch and rendering work. So I don't have to worry about cables overheating. (It's a video editing system) The SSD and the HDD will just be used as occasional deep storage. So, we are using all the thick cables for the motherboard, cpu and gpu power (yes, I did have to apply some pressure to get the back panel to close, but nothing was compressing the back of the motherboard.) I think we are good. I'll keep the 1600W in the build in case I ever have a need to SLI a dual 2080 RTX Founder's Edition. It's highly unlikely, but you never know. The truth is, I built this thing in a super hurry to meet a client deadline to edit a video project, and all the parts and extra components I had to buy to make the final system work (one Mobo was bad) are lying all over the basement in a catastrophic mess. I'll never be able to rebox the 1600W with all the parts it came with for an honest return. They are strewn far and beyond piles of boxes and loose screws and foam. My organizational skills were piss poor. That's $450 gone. Final lesson: When you set out to build a super computer on a deadline, buy enough parts for two. That's a variation of "When seeking revenge, do not dig one grave, but two." This configuration or build worked for a top high performance (all in one) Adobe Premiere video editing, VR, 4k Gaming computer build as of March 2019: - Core i9-x series 9820x LGA 2066
- Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 4x16 64GB 3600MHz
- EVGA 1600 t2 Supernova (Overkill: This system only requires @860 Watts or 1000 Watts to be safe)

I found a good reason for the 1600W T2 SuperNova - deep learning workstations. This is the only power supply I've found that holds up well to the highly cyclic "thrashing" power loads. I've used other top brands, in smaller wattages that should have been more than sufficient, but they don't hold up. I've been through a pile of failed power supplies. The power loads while running deep-learning sessions on multi-GPU workstations makes the lights flicker in the office. Sometimes they pop weak breakers too. I did replace the ridiculously oversized power cord though, with one that also fits nice and tight and doesn't fall out.

Make sure the replacement cable can handle the current. I recently have a cable burn out on me almost set the whole system on fire.
