Upgrade notifications return to Windows 7 as end of life date looms

Windows 7’s end of life update is pencilled in for the 14th of January 2020. After this date, some businesses with deep pockets will be able to pay for an extra two years of support but this option won’t be available to everyone. 
 
Microsoft is bringing ‘Get Windows 10’ pop-up notifications back to Windows 7. The last time Microsoft imposed these notifications on users, it caused quite the stir, so this time around, users will be able to turn the notifications off. Of course, those who have waited this long will have a barrier to worry about when upgrading. Windows 10 is no longer a free update to those on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
 
So no free upgrade any longer.

    It's has always been a free upgrade, just not through Windows Update. Downloading the ISO with the WMC tool and putting it on a USB stick or DVD and upgrading/clean install has been the free upgrade since Windows 10 released. I know, I've been doing this to customer's computers since the beginning.

    The good news is there are some Very Nice third party security products out, that keep you safer than MS ever has with Win 7 or Win 10

    In classic style, Microsoft wants to patch break things before they drop support for it. Software Darwinism at work with this company.

    +1.  I just used this method on an old HP laptop that had Win7 on it a month or so back.  I pulled the old HDD out and put an SSD in it and fresh installed Win10 on it.  All activated (and free) using the Win7 license key.
