According to the pictures of the EVGA store it supposed to be an active VRM cooler but in reviews it looks like a passive heatsink.

Hello Morton2, The motherboard should be an active cooler on the later revisions. Our website is correct. Most reviewers may have reviewed an older version of the board. In later versions, the VRM fan has been added. Happy overclocking . Regards, Thomas N.

Is there a way to differentiate them? By serial number or something like that?

So are the EVGA x299 FTW mobo's on amazon currently upgraded with this new VRM with fan? I still see the VRM without fan on amazon pics?

Thanks for your input, but I'd like to know if there is a way to differentiate whether there is an active or passive cooler before I buy. I'm building a new system and intend to order this motherboard. I still can't believe the OP took the time to tell us that support answered him but didn't post the answer here so others wanting to know can find the answer. lol

I appreciate that you're trying to help, but I know what a heatsink is and why they are used. My question regarding this specific motherboard is whether there is a way to tell from the model number or serial number if it's the later revision that has active (has a fan and heatsink) or passive cooling (heatsink only). It is a known fact that later revisions of the EVGA X299 FTW K have active cooling and not just passive cooling. I want to be able to make sure I purchase the revision of motherboard that has the active cooling. A previous poster said that support responded and told him how to differentiate but he did not share that information with us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is wanting the answer to this question.

If you can get the serial number, I believe we can check whether it will have an active or passive heatsink.

Thank you, I appreciate that! I have already ordered the board, so it's a moot point now. Thanks to all who helped or tried to help. :)
