Just looking for a sanity check to see if I've missed anything important or potentially might make a bad choice here. I've attached a potential list from Newegg of stuff to rebuild my current system (in signature). Not sure if I'm buying any/all parts from them eventually but it made it easy to collect them in one spot.  I think the biggest thing I'm unsure on still is my memory choice.

https://secure.newegg.com/Wishlist/SharedWishlistDetail?ID=eS5qRb0lnLQ%3d&&cm_mmc=snc-email-_-sr-_-wishlist-eS5qRb0lnLQ%3d-_-01/17/2019

Gigabyte Aorus Ultra
i7-9700K
DDR4-3000 CL16 2x16GB (I do photo/video editing also)
EVGA SuperNova 750 P2 PSU
Phanteks Enthoo Luxe tempered glass
EVGA CLC 280

I'll be reusing things like my EVO 850 and WD Black and of course peripherals. Also my 1yr old GTX1070.
I'm not 100% set on the case, PSU, or cooling.  Open to alternates of course. As far as the RAM it's around the price range I'm hoping to keep it at and had read DDR4-3000 was a good sweet spot right now for the higher end Intel CPU's. I'll definitely be doing some OC but nothing crazy to start. Would eventually like to go custom water partly for the looks. Either way I want to move away from the massive air coolers like my current 9 year old Noctua NH-D14.

My Corsair 850 PSU is still working fine as far as I can tell, but it's also 9 years old this year and it runs 24/7 even though most of that is idle so I figure time to replace.  Also I'll probably be turning it and the other old parts into a file server or a streaming PC for Twitch broadcasting or something.

You posted i7-4790K instead of i7-9700k you added to newegg wishlist.

You could make your own Windows 10 pro 64-bit USB boot drive using Microsoft Media Creation Tool and save $$.  You can buy a Window 10 Pro 64-bit key online for around $20-30. I recommend using a 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive. That way you have plenty of space to add other folders that contain all your drives and software install you need after formatting.

Not in a rush to build the system, keep an eye out for the power supply you want to go sale.

Woops, thought I fixed the CPU listing error yeah that should have been a 9700K.  It's fixed now.  Uh, well, I've heard of those keys, I'd prefer to keep it legit at this point.  I do know how to use the media creation tool though.  It's how I've installed Win10 from scratch every time I've done it.  Also looks like if I go liquid I was reading some stuff about how the closed loop stuff dries up over time then your stuck so I might look into one of the AIO kits that are refillable (seen a few that are the same price range as CLC) or just spend the extra $$$ up front and do it custom to start.

The Windows 10 is free and from Microsoft (you need no key) as long as you have a USB stick or a DVD burner.
I used this to upgrade all 3 of my computers from a DVD, just make sure your bios is set to start from a usb (if you are booting from one) or a DVD if you went that route.
This is a legitimate copy of Win 10.
Just google Windows 10 creation tool and Microsoft will tell what to do.
Apparently Microsoft was everyone to run Win 10.
I would then google Win 10 anti spying tools and their is a few YouTube video's on how to speed up Windows by deleting unnecessary apps, also their are video's on configuring Nvidia Control Center to optimize their drivers for most performance.

I already have Win10 and an active key, MSim is talking about that I added a new copy of Win10 license keys to my Newegg list which is accurate because I'm keeping the old license with the old hardware and will need a second one.  MS does not just give  you Win10 for free unless you had a previous non-upgraded OS to upgrade the key on.  However, I found out one of my WoW guildies who I knew worked for MS can get me a Win10 Pro key from them at employee cost which is dirt cheap so I'll be doing that for the new key.  As I mentioned above, I know how to use the creation tool, I've used it for all my Win10 installs.

Anyone have any feedback on the RAM or PSU?  I was looking at some corsair and seasonic stuff as well but I was curious about the EVGA ones.  They're new since I bought the current corsair I've been using since 2010.

I'm using the same EVGA SuperNova 750 P2 PSU in 2 systems. One was bought in 2016 other in 2017. No issues at all with them. It all depends on your budget. If you can catch EVGA G3 or Seasonic focus Plus 80 Plus Gold rated unit on sale, you could save around $60 over going with SuperNova 750 P2.

Check these sites below every day, maybe you will get lucky, catch EVGA SuperNova 750 P2, EVGA G3 750 or SeaSonic Focus plus 750 80+ Gold rated on sale.

I'd see if faster RAM fits in your budget 3200 - 3600 range

Use the tool at G.Skill or the MB approved RAM list to make it painless to setup & use

I like to use G.Skill RAM

If your luck enough to live within driving range - Micro Center, almost always has the best CPU prices
They also give a $30 discount on the MB if purchased at the same time as the CPU

I would go Seasonic first, then Corsair, 2nd, and EVGA last. Seasonic is still the only ones using excellent caps all the way around, Corsair is using 1/2 and half, and EVGA's psu (I have had 2) QA is not up to par as well as using 1/2 and 1/4 and 1/4 caps.
As for RAM, whatever looks you like. They are ALL the same, come from the same mfr, and the only difference is the timings and cooling/rgb. For better timings I like G.Skill Ripjaws, but I have also had to replace 2-3 sets before to get working sets (2, 3, and 4 stick sets). Really, you wont notice the performance anyway.
I responded to your case question in the other thread: Thor 2. Awesome case. I will never get rid of mine, and I have 2 HAF-X cases also, amongst other cases.

If you want a really good look at psu's and their quality, got to hardocp . com and check psu reviews. Johnny's reviews are a lot harder to interpret, but also a very good source for psu info.

Thanks guys, I'll probably check out the Seasonic PSU's.  One of the reasons I was looking at the EVGA P2 vs the G2 is full modular on the P2 but I think maybe Newegg had some wrong pics or I'm confusing models because apparently it's "xQ" models that are semi-modular.  Still, I'd rather spend a little extra on a quality platinum since I apparently like to hold onto them for a long time.  My HX850 is the blue logo one from 2010 lol.  I think I was looking around the PC-3000 range after hearing that speeds weren't as critical for Intel systems right now vs AMD but maybe that's some bogus Internet "fact" or something?

edit:  Also unfortunately I'm nowhere near a Microcenter. The only one in CA is a few hundred miles south of me lol.

I would say the real hard choices are storage and enclosure. You seem to have a handle on the other components. I know you say you want to use the Samsung SSD and WD spinner, but nothing in this list of stuff comes close to the value of your data. I would not risk running that 850 past 2021. I really like the performance and prices of 2TB NVMe drives. The maximum size of a boot drive in W10 is 2TB (as of a few months ago at least), this seems like a smart buy to me, but even the 2.5" SSDs at 2TB will do you fine.

But you said you have the hx850 from 2010?
If you just bought it, then it could be a new model branded that same name, and not as good as the original, or if you got it used then you have no idea HOW it was used: 1/8th power load, 1/2 power loads, or full 100% power loads.
Also, if it is a TRUE 2010 model, even when they just sit on the shelves they degrade slowly.
But with that 1070 and what else you are running, it should still be good, as long as it wasnt used for 3 years at 100% power usage.

And yeah, 2TB ssd would be good. Evo is 'ok', but the Pro is SO much better. Going from the evo to the pro though you might not even notice the difference, so...

My HX850 I bought myself in 2010 when I built an i7-860, and then re-used in 2014 when I built my 4790K.  It's not at 100% usage, but the system IS on 24/7 and it's now 2 years past it's warranty.  Either way it's going to stay with the current board/CPU because I'm keeping them for an extra system (file server or twitch streaming or something) and building a new PC mostly this time around.  I'm a little confused now about the comments on the 850 Evo, they're supposed to be warrantied for 5 years and have like 150TB of writes in them minimum.  Are they failing early?  I read some tests where they were still working many dozens of times past that write amount even.  However yes prices have definitely come down so I could probably do one of the 2TB M.2 2280's that are around 250-300 on Newegg.  I don't know much about the M.2 format because my current Asus board can only take a very small 2260 size so I never used it.  I never even did SSD of any kind until the 500GB 2.5" SATA kind became affordable because I needed that much minimum for what I wanted it for (Windows plus MS Flightsim X with a couple hundred GB of scenery addons).

Oh, that's different, I assumed you've had it since 850s were 1st out. Though, I'd still consider having a replacement drive on deck by 2021.

You ARE talking about the Corsair 850 POWER SUPPLY, right?
If so, do NOT use it in a new build, if you have been using it since 2010, especially while using it in a system that runs 24/7 @ 100% power usage. Jeez. Its probably down to a 500 or 550 by now, with components insides going out fast.

Yes I was originally talking about the PSU.  Bucyrus5000 was talking about my EVO 850 SSD though so I can definitely see the confusion.

To be clear though, the system is turned on 24/7 but most of the time is just idling.  It only gets a few hours a day of actual use for gaming/etc.  It's not pushing Folding or anything like that.

I think I've decided at this point to re-use the old PC parts (old once I do the new build) as a second PC for a fileserver/etc and so the current 2010 era PSU will just stay with it.  I'll probably replace it with something down the road also just to make sure it doesn't die and take anything with it.  Won't need much for a replacement wattage wise though because it won't be doing and gaming and just pushing the built in Intel graphics for desktop use and whatever a streaming capture card might need if I use it as a streaming PC for twitch when gaming on my main rig.

I just worry about relying on an early gen SSD for more than three or four years. I too have a 850 EVO I plan to replace.

I've been looking at M.2 SSD's and I think I might be able to pull off a 1TB one.  Anything bigger is still out of the price range I think.  I'll probably keep the 850 for a system drive for my current hardware and run whatever off it.  I should probably replace that WD Black physical as well it's like 7 years old now.  Don't need much just extra for games/photos/etc that won't fit on a new larger SSD (current is 500GB and has about 380GB filled).  My current 2TB physical drive is about 1/2 full.

Ok I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on at least some of the parts.  I was looking at these for PSU and RAM.  I'm open to recommendations.  Especially on the RAM.  I've heard speed is not as critical on Intel and maybe timings matter more but for instance I was looking at DDR3000 vs 3200 in the kit I'm linking and for about the same price I can buy a marginally faster timings 3000 not sure if there would be any real difference there.  I still need to look at a new SSD and mechanical drive to hold general data and apps that aren't load speed dependent.  I will be watercooling with either one of Alphacool's open loop AIO's or their custom loop kit packages.

The only thing I'll be re-using from inside the case on my current system is the GTX 1070. Then of course all my peripheral stuff.  I'll keep the old mobo, drives, case, PSU, etc. as a second system for streaming/etc. and use the built in video in the 4790K display purposes as needed.  So I'll have to get new drives vs my OP thought of re-using.  I hadn't decided to keep the old stuff as a secondary system for ??? purposes when I posted originally.

get the 3200 RAM - price being equal & watch for a sale

PSU, once you locked in the size you want - buy the best Quality your budget will allow.

The PSU is the most important part of the build and the least appreciated part of the build; usually bought based on budget (what is left) & not quality

Thanks for the info!  I'll take a 2nd look at the EVGA PSU's.  This is a list I put together earlier that I was thinking about.  You'll see I changed the RAM up, went for 16 again after realizing I probably don't really need 32.  I was able to get 3200 and CAS 14 instead of the 3000 CAS 16 for about $30 less than what I was going to pay for the slower 32GB package.

Just to note I'm not 100% set on the case and cooling solution yet in that list, and I'll be re-using the GTX 1070 I have already.

Not really other than the memory timings/speed and the mobo because of what I've been hearing about Gigabyte's VRM vs everyone else on the Z390's and it seemed to have the features I was after.  I'm open to suggestions as well as always.

Well is there a reason why you are not considering AMD Ryzen if I may ask?
As sure Intel is still better at gaming but we are only a few months away from Zen 2 and there may be cheaper options than the i7-9700K

I say going intel right now is ill advised, I would wait a bit more until Zen 2 comes out.
I am no AMD fanboy but the timing of Zen2 is very close at hand and it will be interesting to see if AMD can finally put the smack down on intel

Assuming I still use MS Flight Sim X on the new build I need the fastest single thread performance for it and right now that's still Intel.

Still I say hold off, i mean if your machine still works no harm in using it.

Zen2 will be 7nm so that may be something that will help in single thread
