Hi All,

I have the Z170 Classified K board (142-SS-E178). Can anyone tell me which position on the BIOS selector switch selects which BIOS? My understanding is that this board has one BIOS chip soldered to the board, and one that is user replaceable. I want to flash the user replaceable chip in case the update borks it. For the sake of this discussion let's call the position towards the SATA ports position 1, and the position towards the ATX power connector position 2.

edit: changed title for clarity
edit2: solved, see post #13

Interesting question - I'm searching now

- short of removing it & testing

Is the BIOS indicated in the BIOS Screen ?  - one of them called primary or BIOS 1

No mention in manual or here   https://www.evga.com/Products/pdf/142-SS-E178.pdf

Pure Guess - "logically" the top fixed BIOS chip should go with the switch pushed towards the 24-pin headed & switch pushed down toward the removable chip

50% chance of this being correct

I couldn't find anything in the BIOS screens that indicated which BIOS is selected.

Information seems to be really sparse when it comes to this switch. For being a touted feature of EVGA motherboards, there is surprisingly little info in the user manuals. I spot checked a few other manuals, no info there either.

I could, and they would likely know the answer although I suspect they might have to search for this info themselves. But instead of spending their time and my time, I would spend all of your guy's time instead

P.S. The forum search function sucks. Searching "Z170" in this board gives me just two threads from the last year.

Yes, that will be my next step when I have time to call EVGA CS. I will take your suggestion and edit the title. And trust me, I googled the crap out of this before posting on here. It feels like I am the only person who has ever asked this question. Maybe it's buried in the forum somewhere, but now that all of the legacy mobos are lumped together it is a nightmare to find anything. I will of course update this thread when I find the answer.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the board literally have BIOS1 and BIOS2 written on the PCB next to the chips?

Open your case and look at the board.

Yes, the removable BIOS has BIOS1 written next to it. I can't even locate the other BIOS chip, so I can't say what's written next to it. That is not really the problem. The problem is that the switch has no indication of which BIOS is selected.

That's how I knew the switch didn't have any indications on it.

Pop the chip out and see if the board still posts? You're just wasting time when you could've figured it out in 5 minutes.

Final update. I just talked to EVGA tech support. I have been informed that both BIOSs are contained on the same user replaceable chip. I had made the assumption that there was one permanent chip and one replaceable chip, since that seemed logical at the time given the limited information available. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Does anyone know which way the BIOS chip is placed? There's a red dot, I'm guessing it should be in the LOWER RIGHT (same as the chip above it) but obviously if you flip it the red dot LINES UP with the chip above it... either way seems logical.

Do you remember which way its placed?

The dot corresponds with the arrow.
