I have a Corsair 750 Watt Rmx Gold rated Power Supply.

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB
HDD: Seagate FireCuda SSHD 1TB
RAM: Corsair CMW16GX4M2C3000C15 2x8GB
MBD: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING
Monitor: ASUS VG248QE 24'' 1920X1080P 144HZ It can run 60hz 85hz 100hz 130hz and 144hz. Dual Link.
I plan to use Display port but I know this is pointless to mention.

I did a PC part picker and it draws 304 watts give or take but I used the  psu calculator and it shows Load Wattage: 375 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 425 W and it shows I draw about 425 watts. However the surge protector I am using is from Walmart and it's called Ultra Pro. It has like over about 2160 joules.
I just want the proper power surge to protect my PC and have good power. I am trying to convince my family members to get a electrician to check the wires in the house but it'll be expensive. I won't blame the house but the house is a bit old but I will move soon anyways. I just want a good efficient surge protector to provide the proper power for my Desktop. I need some honest expertise from any gamers out there. One more question. I have a motherboard that supports display port. Am I able to play games with my video card if I use my motherboard display port or does it HAVE to be connected to the video card to play required titled games? Get back to me. Thanks!

Re: What is a good PC gaming Surge protector? 2019/03/11 10:08:45 (permalink)
A surge protector is to protect against abnormal high voltage spikes and the best to stop any is with a panel surge protector at the power panel or also known as a breaker box as something like lightning will go where ever it wants to but if stopped at the panel there is a path of shortest way to ground and not going through the building first before getting there.
The quality of the power is on the shoulders of the power utility company and has nothing to do with a surge protector and all it does is pass through it.
Most surge protectors are good for 15 amps because the vast majority of residential branch circuits are just that.

The calculations done by the GPU to be displayed come out the card's ports and do not go through the motherboard.

First off the video card out should be the connection to use.

As for the I would recommend a universal power supply as those have a battery inside that will give the computer time to shutdown in the event of a power outage. With just a surge protector if the power suddenly goes out the computer instantly loses power and everything you are doing is lost. By using a battery you also protect against a home with old wiring that can be a bit unstable or that has circuits that sometimes trip. This is the more expensive option as costs can be $100 and up and the battery will only last a couple years before it needs to be replaced which can be about half the cost of the unit.

For if a surge of power that happens from lets say a lighting strike it's less important to have a huge surge protector. The lighting would have to hit between your home and the nearest transformer. Half of the strike would travel into your home and the other half would travel to the transformer. The half that hits the home would then travel into everything inside of the home so your TV, lightbulbs, microwave, dishwasher and even your garbage disposal would all take the same share of energy as your computer. That explained Ultra Pro doesn't sound like a brand I recognize as I normally would look for something more like Belkin, APC, GE, Tripp Lite, or Cyber Power. The higher the Joules of course the better and for a PC I would try to look for something more around the 4,000 range. This option would be closer to $20 to $40. You can spend more but I kind of feel that it's more of extra features at that price or look at that price range. What I have hooked up to my TV was like $18.99 but that was on sale.

Has anyone really had any damage done to PC because of not using a correct surge protector? Serious question.

The only reason I use a surge protecting power strip is because I can turn one socket of a duplex receptacle into many more.

As for a surge protector I haven't had any problem with one ever but it's the kind of thing you normally want one with support for multiple box sized plugs and some even have useful features like USB charging which I use for my phone. A cheap one might work ok but I am ok with spending half of what I would on a game to get something good.

It's also worth pointing out that old surge protectors should be replaced as they are not built to last forever. It depends on the brand but if it's over a decade old it's probably time to replace them.

I agree, I have 2-3 Surge protectors, 1 to connect my TV/Home theater another for my PC, Printer, Monitors, etc. and another one for my phone chargers, etc. I usually buy new ones every 2-3 years when I do a complete "remodel" of my set up, meaning build or buy a new desk and move my room around lol

I was going to ask the OP if he meant UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) like what bcavnaugh posted instead of surge protector, as others have pointed out - as it's name means - a surge protector protects against a power surge from either a lightning strike or failing transformer.
It doesn't really matter too much how much power you draw through it.

An UPS on the other hand you really need to have the correct sized one to properly power the connected devices

A good (and higher priced then your generic surge protectors) is something like - https://www.tripplite.com/isobar-6-outlet-surge-protector-6-ft-cord-3300-joules-diagnostic-leds~ISOBAR6ULTRA

I have a few different model Tripplite isobar series surge protectors

Edit note:For clarification - there is no "Gaming" surge protector or UPS - if you do find one that is labeled as such it is marketing hype and probably over priced

I think he just meant one that covers a gaming PC, Which as we know often have larger power output than a PC sold just for surfing the web.

Thanks guys I meant a surge protector but a APC is something I would consider though unless I move to a nicer place. I'll look into it.

Best Buy is the only place I can go besides Micro Center unless I get time to go then I will.

Can you recommend me a good brand you usually use? Including display port? I have a display port from best buy and I sorta hate it. it's a cheap brand. What is the best brand to use?

I have an ASUS VG248QE 144hz monitor. I am using a display port brand called INSIGNIA

I think you are confusing terminology - and please just drop the "gaming" part of your statements as that is not a factor.
The joules is how big of a surge the thing will shunt to ground in case of a massive voltage spike from something like a lightning strike on your power pole - the higher the number the better you are protected. The only other number would be if they say there is a circuit breaker built in - most seem to be 20 amps

There is a link right there in my post you quoted with a good brand, but if you are just going to go to best buy or MC then just get whatever they have in stock

I like this one, has USB port too so you can charge your phone.

Also when power goes out it often blinks a few times, can do that when it comes back on.
That is when there will be big spikes in the voltage.
One thing to do is go in the BIOS and there is a setting power last state. Set it to off.
That way if the power goes out it will turn off and stay off and not keep trying to start with each power blip.

Re: What is a good PC gaming Surge protector? 2019/03/16 10:13:35 (permalink)
Surge protectors just have MOVs inside which clamp down when the voltage reaches a very high threshold ... like 180v peaks and stuff like that. Any quality PSU also has MOVs inside which means it basically already has a surge protector built in. Especially in this day of switchmode power supplies, which may be rated to operate just fine at anywhere between 70v and 240v (for example), I don't see how a surge protector is very beneficial.

I wouldn't waste my money on a surge protector. Instead, consider a power conditioner or uninterrupted power supply, if you are serious about safe, reliable power.
